PROJECT DESCRIPTION: OUTDOOR OUTLET REPLACEMENT – FORT MYERS, FL
We were called to a house in Fort Myers where the outdoor outlet had completely stopped working. That’s not unusual here — outdoor receptacles take a beating from rain, humidity, and just regular use. Over time they can corrode, get moisture inside, or the GFCI mechanism just wears out.
What We Did
We checked the outlet first to confirm it wasn’t getting power and to figure out what caused it. After disconnecting it safely, we pulled out the damaged receptacle. Then we put in a brand-new outdoor-rated GFCI outlet, the kind designed to handle the weather. We also added an in-use cover so rain and debris won’t be an issue going forward. Once everything was installed, we tested it under load, checked the grounding, and made sure it all lined up with NEC code.
The Result
Now the homeowner has a reliable outdoor outlet again. They can plug in tools, holiday lights, or backyard speakers without worrying. The GFCI adds protection against shocks, and the cover helps it hold up against Florida weather.
FAQs
Why did the old outlet quit?
Moisture and corrosion are usually the culprits. Sometimes the wiring or the GFCI part inside just gives out after years outside.
Why does it have to be GFCI?
Because it’s outside. GFCIs shut power off the second they sense a fault, which prevents shocks. It’s required by code and it’s a safety must.
How long does a replacement take?
Most of the time, less than an hour. The only thing that slows it down is if the wiring is in really bad shape or hard to reach.
Is the new outlet weatherproof?
Yes. We only install weather-rated GFCIs and use protective covers so they can handle rain and debris.
Can this be done along with other work?
Absolutely. A lot of homeowners combine outlet replacements with surge protection, lighting upgrades, or other small repairs.
