Waterfront electrical work isnโ€™t the same as wiring a house โ€” and not every electrician knows the difference.

Salt air eats through standard materials faster than youโ€™d expect. Moisture gets into places it shouldnโ€™t. The code requirements for docks, boat lifts, and marina installations are more specific than most residential work, and they exist for good reason. When waterfront electrical goes wrong, the consequences arenโ€™t just a tripped breaker or a dead outlet. Electric shock drowning is a real hazard around docks with faulty or improperly installed wiring, and it doesnโ€™t get talked about nearly enough.

We take this work seriously because the stakes are different out there.

Coharbor Electric handles dock and marine electrical for homeowners and waterfront properties across Fort Myers, Naples, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, Sanibel Island, Estero, Fort Myers Beach, Lehigh Acres and surrounding areas.

ย

What We Work On

Boat lift wiring is probably our most common waterfront call โ€” new installs, replacements, and troubleshooting when a lift stops behaving the way it should. We also handle dock lighting, power pedestals, shore power connections, GFCI protection, and full electrical buildouts for new dock construction.

And then there are the older docks that havenโ€™t been looked at in ten or fifteen years. The wiring was fine when it was installed. But waterfront components in Southwest Floridaโ€™s salt air environment donโ€™t age the same way interior wiring does. If nobodyโ€™s checked it recently, itโ€™s worth knowing whatโ€™s actually there.

ย

Why This Work Is Different

The NEC has specific requirements for docks, boathouses, and marina installations that go well beyond standard residential code. Marine-rated wire. Corrosion-resistant fixtures. Correct GFCI placement. Proper bonding and grounding to prevent stray current from entering the water.

That last one isnโ€™t a technicality. Electric shock drowning happens when faulty or improperly grounded dock wiring lets current leak into the water around a dock. Itโ€™s invisible, itโ€™s dangerous, and itโ€™s entirely preventable with a correct installation.

This is why we donโ€™t approach waterfront electrical the same way we approach a bedroom outlet.

Questions We Hear

How do I know if my dock wiring needs to be looked at?

If itโ€™s been more than ten years since anyone checked it, thatโ€™s reason enough. Beyond that โ€” corroded fixtures, outlets that donโ€™t work reliably, breakers that trip when you use the dock, or any visible damage to wiring near the water. Any of those, call us.

What is electric shock drowning and how does it relate to dock wiring?

It happens when stray electrical current leaks into the water near a dock, creating a voltage gradient that can paralyze someone swimming nearby. Itโ€™s caused by faulty grounding or improper installation. The right bonding, grounding, and GFCI protection prevents it โ€” which is exactly why this work needs to be done correctly from the start.

Do dock electrical systems have to meet specific code requirements?

Yes โ€” the NEC has requirements specific to marinas, docks, and boathouses that cover wire type, conduit, GFCI placement, bonding, and grounding. We know those requirements and make sure every job meets them.

Can you wire a new dock during construction?

Yes. Getting us involved early on a new dock build makes everything go smoother โ€” the electrical gets planned in from the start rather than figured out after everything else is already in place.

Do you handle boat lift motor wiring?

Yes. New installs, replacements, and troubleshooting. If your lift is acting up electrically, give us a call.
