If youโ€™ve lived in Southwest Florida for any amount of time, you already know what storm season looks like. The sky goes dark in the afternoon, lightning starts hitting close, and youโ€™re mentally running through everything plugged in around the house.

Most people grab a power strip and call it a day. The problem is that a power strip isnโ€™t built for what comes in off the utility line during a serious storm. A nearby lightning strike, a downed power line, a grid fluctuation โ€” that kind of surge travels right through your wiring and into every device in your home. TVs, refrigerators, HVAC systems, computers. Sometimes you know immediately. Sometimes you find out a few days later when something stops working and you canโ€™t figure out why.

Whole-home surge protection is the fix for that. It installs at your panel and catches the spike before it ever reaches your outlets. Itโ€™s not expensive, itโ€™s not complicated, and itโ€™s something a surprising number of Southwest Florida homes donโ€™t have.

Coharbor Electric installs whole-house surge protectors and handles electrical safety work for homeowners across Fort Myers, Naples, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, Sanibel Island, Estero, Fort Myers Beach, Lehigh Acres and surrounding areas.

ย

What Whole-Home Surge Protection Does

The surge protector at your panel works differently than the strip under your desk. The strip is designed for small everyday fluctuations โ€” itโ€™s not going to stop a serious spike from the utility line. Panel-level protection catches that before it ever gets to your outlets.

Used together, they cover both ends. But if you only have one, the panel protector is the one that matters more for what actually happens here during storm season.

ย

The Other Electrical Safety Stuff

Surge protection is one piece of it. We also deal with the broader safety picture โ€” breakers that are outdated or known to fail, wiring thatโ€™s deteriorating or was never installed correctly, missing GFCI and AFCI protection in the spots where itโ€™s required, and anything else in the system thatโ€™s a real fire or shock risk.

A lot of older homes in Southwest Florida have a collection of issues that stacked up over the years. None of them individually felt urgent enough to deal with. Together they add up to something worth taking seriously. An inspection gives you a clear picture of where things actually stand.

ย

Why This Matters More Here

Florida leads the country in lightning strikes. Add in hurricane season, summer storms that roll in almost daily, and utility infrastructure thatโ€™s taken some hits over the years โ€” and this is genuinely one of the places in the country where taking surge protection seriously makes sense.

Weโ€™re not trying to sell you on something you donโ€™t need. We just work in these homes every day and weโ€™ve seen what happens when this stuff gets ignored.

Questions We Hear

Whatโ€™s the actual difference between a whole-home surge protector and a power strip?

A power strip handles small everyday fluctuations at the device level. A whole-home protector installs at your panel and stops major surges โ€” the kind that come in from the utility line during a storm โ€” before they reach anything in your house. Both have value, but if you donโ€™t have panel-level protection, the power strip alone isnโ€™t enough.

Will it protect against a direct lightning strike?

Not completely โ€” nothing does. A direct strike carries more energy than any protector is rated for. What it does protect against is the far more common scenario: nearby strikes and surges traveling in through the utility lines, which is what actually damages most homes.

How do I know if my wiring is a safety issue?

Breakers that trip regularly, outlets that feel warm, flickering lights, or any burning smell near switches or outlets are all worth having looked at. If your home is older and nobodyโ€™s checked the electrical in years, thatโ€™s reason enough to schedule an inspection.

Can you do the surge protector installation and an inspection at the same time?

Yes โ€” and a lot of homeowners do both at once. It makes sense to know what the full picture looks like while weโ€™re already there.

Whole-Home Surge Protector Installation

`

Protect your entire electrical system from high-voltage surges caused by storms or utility spikes. We install panel-mounted devices that divert surges away from your homeโ€™s circuitsโ€”so your electronics, appliances, and HVAC stay safe.

Whatโ€™s included:

  • Surge protection device (SPD) installed at your main panel

Breaker Panel Inspections & Upgrades

Outdated panels and damaged breakers can cause fires, power loss, and nuisance tripping. We inspect, repair, or upgrade your panel to ensure it meets current electrical codeโ€”and has the capacity to safely handle your homeโ€™s needs.

We check for:

  • Overloaded or corroded breakers

  • Double-lugging and loose connections

  • Burn marks, buzzing, or heat damage

  • Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or other recalled panels

If your panel is unsafe or outdated, weโ€™ll explain your options clearly.
