Project Description: Garage Light Upgrade in Sanibel, FL

We wrapped up a garage lighting upgrade for a homeowner in Sanibel, FL. The goal was to improve both the functionality of the interior lighting and the appearance of the exterior with new coach lights.

What We Did:

  • Pulled new wiring from an existing 2-gang switch box in the garage
  • Installed a stacked switch so the homeowner can control both the garage lights and the new outdoor coach light from one spot
  • In the attic, we added a junction box and ran new circuits through ½” EMT conduit down both sides of the garage
  • Drilled through the block wall and carefully chiseled out the stucco to install a secure, fan-rated box for the exterior light
  • Mounted the coach lights and a chalk light, including some ceiling work and wall penetrations
  • Removed an old flush-mounted outlet and replaced it with a surface-mounted 4-square box for better access
  • Ran conduit from that box up to the ceiling, keeping everything neat and code-compliant
  • Installed weather-resistant GFCI outlets on both sides of the garage, each with a proper cover for outdoor use

The Result:

The garage is now brighter, safer, and more convenient to use. The added exterior lights not only improve visibility at night but also give the home a more polished look. All work was done with durability and future needs in mind, using proper materials and up-to-code practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How long did the garage light upgrade take?
We were able to finish everything in just one day. Of course, it always depends on things like attic access, how the walls are built, and what kind of fixtures are being installed—but for this job, it took about 6 to 8 hours.

2. Did you need a permit for the work?
Yes, we pulled the necessary permits to make sure everything was up to code. We followed both the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local Sanibel regulations to keep everything safe and compliant.

3. What type of lights were added outside?
We installed stylish coach lights and a chalk light to brighten up the outside and add some curb appeal. All the fixtures were outdoor-rated and properly sealed against the weather.

4. Are the new outlets strong enough for power tools?
Absolutely. We used weather-resistant, tamper-resistant GFCI outlets—perfect for garages. They’re grounded and safe to use with heavy-duty tools or any outdoor equipment.

5. Can this setup be expanded later, like for smart lights or motion sensors?
Yes, and that was part of the plan. The way we ran the conduit and set up the junction boxes makes it easy to add smart controls, motion sensors, or more lighting in the future.
