A homeowner out near Vanderbilt Lagoon called us this past spring after his boat lift stopped working mid-launch โ€” motor just quit, boat stuck halfway down. He figured it was the motor itself and was already bracing for a big number. Turned out the motor was fine. The wiring feeding it had corroded at a junction box connection to the point where it was barely making contact anymore, and vibration from normal use had finally worked it loose completely. Fixing the actual problem cost him a fraction of what a new lift motor would have run. He just hadnโ€™t known that was even a possibility until we opened the box and showed him.

Thatโ€™s the thing about dock wiring costs โ€” the range is genuinely wide, and what drives it isnโ€™t always what people expect. A small connection repair and a full rewire of a dockโ€™s electrical system are two very different jobs, and knowing which one you actually need matters more than any ballpark number we could give you up front.

The General Range

For a straightforward repair โ€” replacing a corroded connection, swapping a failed GFCI receptacle at a shore power pedestal, or repairing a damaged run of dock lighting wire โ€” most jobs in the Naples area run somewhere between $300 and $900, depending on access and how much of the run needs to be traced and replaced.

A more involved repair, like replacing a boat lift motorโ€™s feeder circuit or dealing with a junction box thatโ€™s corroded badly enough to need full replacement rather than just a connection cleanup, tends to land in the $900 to $2,000 range.

A full dock rewire โ€” replacing the entire electrical system serving a dock, including new conduit, new circuits for lighting and lift equipment, and a new or upgraded shore power pedestal โ€” is a bigger project, generally somewhere between $2,500 and $6,000 depending on the dockโ€™s size, how many circuits are involved, and how the existing infrastructure was originally run.

These are ranges, not quotes. The only way to get an accurate number is to have someone actually look at your specific setup, because dock electrical work has more variability than almost anything else we do.

What Actually Drives the Cost

How Bad the Corrosion Actually Is

This is the single biggest factor. A connection thatโ€™s corroded but the surrounding wire and conduit are still sound is a relatively quick, affordable fix. Corrosion thatโ€™s traveled further up the line โ€” into the conduit run itself, or into multiple junction boxes along the way โ€” means more has to be opened up, traced, and replaced. Weโ€™ve seen docks around the Isles of Capri area where one bad connection turned out to be the tip of a much bigger corrosion problem once we started tracing the circuit back toward the house.

Access to the Dock and Conduit Run

Docks that are easy to get under or alongside, with conduit thatโ€™s visible and accessible, cost less to work on than docks where wiring runs beneath decking that has to come up, or through conduit buried in a seawall cap that requires more careful work to access without damaging the structure.

Whatโ€™s Being Repaired or Replaced

A single receptacle or a section of lighting circuit is a smaller job than boat lift motor feeder wiring, which typically runs a higher-gauge circuit and often needs its own dedicated protection. Shore power pedestal replacement is its own category โ€” pedestals arenโ€™t cheap as equipment, and installing one correctly, with proper grounding and ground-fault protection per code, takes real labor on top of the material cost.

Permitting

Electrical work on a dock in Naples falls under Collier County permitting requirements, same as any other electrical work tied to the property. Thatโ€™s part of doing it right, and we build permitting into our quotes so itโ€™s not a surprise added on afterward. Skipping the permit isnโ€™t a real cost-saving option โ€” it just means the work isnโ€™t documented or inspected, which matters a lot for something sitting this close to water where people swim.

Repair vs. Full Rewire โ€” How to Know Which You Need

Homeowners often assume the worst when something on the dock stops working, and sometimes thatโ€™s the right instinct โ€” but not always. A few signs point toward a targeted repair rather than a full rewire:

  • The problem is isolated to one fixture, one receptacle, or one obvious connection point
  • The rest of the dockโ€™s wiring tests clean when we check it
  • The dock and its electrical system are relatively recent, with only a specific section showing wear

Signs that point toward needing a broader rewire instead:

  • Multiple connection points show corrosion when we open them up
  • The dockโ€™s electrical work is old enough that GFCI/ELCI protection per NEC Article 555 isnโ€™t consistently in place across all circuits
  • Youโ€™ve had repeated small failures over the past couple of years โ€” a pattern usually means the whole system is aging out, not just the piece that happens to be failing this time

Why Cheap Dock Wiring Work Usually Costs More Later

Weโ€™ve walked onto docks where a previous repair was done with wire nuts and electrical tape in a housing that wasnโ€™t rated for wet locations โ€” cheap, fast, and exactly the kind of thing that fails again within a year or two, sometimes sooner in this climate. Dock and marine wiring needs marine-rated, water-resistant components throughout, not standard interior-grade materials pressed into service because they were on hand. Paying for it right the first time is usually cheaper than paying for it twice.
