How Many Recessed Lights Do You Need in Fort Myers Homes?

We get this question a lot.
“How many recessed lights do I need in here?”

And honestly, it depends. Every house is different. The layout, the paint, the ceiling height—everything plays a part. But after wiring hundreds of homes across Fort Myers, we’ve learned a few things that’ll help you get it right.

First, Think About What You Do in the Room

Before counting lights, we always ask, “What’s this space for?”

A kitchen needs bright, even light. You want to see what you’re chopping, not cast shadows on the counter.
A living room? That’s a whole different feel. You want softer, warmer light that doesn’t glare off the TV.
Bedrooms should feel cozy. Bathrooms need bright light by the mirror but not harsh overhead.

Every space has a job, and the lighting should match that job. We see it all the time—great fixtures, wrong placement. It’s not about how many cans you buy, it’s about where they go and what they do.

The General Rule We Start With

As a ballpark, we use one recessed light for every 4–6 square feet of ceiling area.

So, if you’ve got a 12×12-foot room (that’s 144 sq. ft.), you’re probably looking at 8 to 12 lights. Smaller rooms, fewer fixtures.

But that’s just a starting point. It shifts once we look at ceiling height, paint color, and how much natural light the room gets.

Ceiling Height Makes a Big Difference

Fort Myers homes often have vaulted or tray ceilings, especially newer builds. That changes everything.

Here’s how we space them:

  • 8-foot ceilings: 4–5 feet apart.

  • 9-foot ceilings: closer, maybe 3½–4 feet apart.

  • 10 feet or higher: use brighter trims or an extra row to fill the space evenly.

We’ve seen what happens when spacing’s off. If they’re too far apart, you get dark patches. Too close, it feels clinical—like a grocery store. Finding that happy medium is what we do best.

Paint Colors and Finishes Matter More Than You Think

One thing people forget: colors change light.

Dark paint and cabinets soak it up. Lighter colors reflect it.

We did a remodel near McGregor Boulevard not long ago—two kitchens, same layout, same recessed lights. The one with white cabinets looked twice as bright as the one with espresso finishes. Same fixtures, totally different feel.

So, if your space has darker tones, plan on adding a bit more lighting or upping the brightness.

Picking the Right Trim and Bulb

Not all recessed lights are created equal. The trim style changes how the light spreads.

  • Baffle trim: reduces glare, softer glow. Great for bedrooms or living areas.

  • Reflector trim: pushes more light down—perfect for kitchens or bathrooms.

  • Gimbal trim: lets you aim the beam—nice for artwork or accent walls.

We stick with LED fixtures these days. They last forever and save a ton on power. Most homeowners around here like a color temperature in the 3000K to 3500K range—just warm enough to feel cozy, but clean enough to see clearly.

If you’d like smoother dimming, scenes, or app control for your recessed lighting, our Fort Myers guide to smart switch upgrades shows how to modernize your switches without opening up walls.

Avoid the “Runway” Look

We’ve all seen it—lights lined up in perfect rows down the center of the room. It’s neat, sure, but it can make the space look flat and cold.

We like to stagger them a little. Keep them a couple of feet off the walls so you don’t cast weird shadows. In kitchens, we line them up with the edges of counters and islands, not the center of the room. That way, the light actually falls where you work.

It’s a small tweak, but it makes a world of difference.

Layer Your Lighting

Recessed lights shouldn’t do all the work. The best rooms use a mix.

  • Ambient light: your recessed lights, the main glow.

  • Task light: pendants, under-cabinet strips, or reading lamps.

  • Accent light: wall sconces or LED strips to add warmth.

We always recommend dimmers too. You can have bright light when you’re cooking and a soft glow at night when you’re winding down. Simple upgrade, huge payoff.

Once you dial in your indoor layout, you can use the same layered approach outside—this guide to outdoor lighting covers power and lighting ideas for patios, lanais, and backyard seating areas around Fort Myers.

A Real Job Example

A few months back, we worked on a home near San Carlos Park. The owners had an 8-foot ceiling and wanted to brighten up their living area. We added ten 6-inch LED can lights spaced evenly, plus a dimmer switch.

When we flipped the lights on for the first time, the homeowner said, “I didn’t realize my walls were that color!”

That’s the thing about good lighting—it doesn’t just make things brighter. It makes the space come alive.

If your Fort Myers or Naples home backs up to the water, you can use similar planning outside with these low-voltage lighting ideas for docks and boat lifts.

How We Do It at CoHarbor Electric

We don’t just count fixtures and call it a day. Every layout we design is customized.

We check ceiling height, paint color, room use, and even natural light direction (because that Florida sun does half the work in the morning). We run through what kind of bulbs and trims make sense, and make sure every light meets local code.

We’ve been doing this across Fort Myers long enough to know what works—and what doesn’t.

Why You Should Let a Pro Handle It

Installing recessed lights looks easy, but it’s not something you want to guess at.

You’ve got to know how to space them, which circuits can handle the load, and how to avoid insulation contact if your ceiling isn’t IC-rated. We’ve seen DIY installs go wrong fast—burned out fixtures, flickering, even ceiling damage from overheating.

That’s why hiring a licensed electrician is worth it. We take care of the wiring, spacing, and safety checks so you can just enjoy the light.

Final Thoughts

So, how many recessed lights do you really need? Probably more than you think—but not too many. For most rooms, one light every 4–6 square feet is a solid baseline, but the real magic is in the layout and how it feels once it’s on.

If you’re ready to brighten your home the right way, we’d be glad to help.
