Had a homeowner in Tice call because her new chest freezer kept tripping the same breaker as the garage lights and the garage door opener. Sheโd assumed the freezer was defective โ brought it back to the store once, actually, before someone suggested it might be an electrical problem instead. It wasnโt the freezer. It was three unrelated things sharing a circuit that was never meant to carry all of them at once. The fix wasnโt complicated: run a new dedicated circuit for the freezer. But that phrase โ โnew circuitโ โ gets thrown around a lot without homeowners really knowing what it means, what it takes, or when itโs actually the right call. So letโs walk through it properly.
A circuit is a wire path from your panel to whatever itโs powering, protected by its own breaker. Installing a new one means running new wire from the panel to the new location, connecting it properly at both ends, and putting a new breaker in the panel to protect it. Sounds simple in a sentence. In practice, how straightforward that is depends almost entirely on two things: whether the panel has room for another breaker, and how far the new wire has to travel and through what.
Panels have a fixed number of breaker slots. Older Fort Myers homes โ plenty of them around Six Mile Cypress and similar established neighborhoods โ sometimes have panels that are already full, every slot occupied, no room left for anything new. When that happens, adding a circuit isnโt just a wire-run job anymore. It means either finding capacity through other means โ tandem breakers where code allows, or replacing existing breakers with the new circuitโs needs in mind โ or, if the panelโs genuinely maxed out, addressing the panel itself before the new circuitโs even possible.

Most household circuits run at 120 volts โ outlets, lighting, small appliances. Larger equipment โ electric ranges, dryers, EV chargers, some window AC units and water heaters โ needs 240 volts, which uses a different wire configuration and a different type of breaker. Installing a 240-volt circuit where one doesnโt currently exist is a bigger job than adding a standard 120-volt outlet circuit, generally, because it often means running heavier gauge wire and confirming thereโs a two-pole breaker slot available, not just a single slot.
The wire gauge for a new circuit gets determined by the amperage of the breaker protecting it and the length of the run โ this isnโt something to eyeball. Undersized wire on a circuit is a genuine fire risk, since it can overheat under load without the breaker necessarily tripping in time to prevent it. Adding a new circuit in Fort Myers requires an electrical permit through the City of Fort Myers Building Department, or through Lee Countyโs building and permitting division if the property is in unincorporated Lee County. Extension cords arenโt rated for permanent, continuous heavy loads, and running one that way is a real fire risk, not just an inconvenience.
