We hear some version of this question almost daily. A homeowner in Laurel Park wanting a rough number before committing to an EV charger. Someone out in Gulf Gate who got a panel quote and has no idea if itโ€™s reasonable. Cost is always the first real question, and it should be โ€” nobody wants to schedule an estimate blind. So hereโ€™s the honest breakdown, upgrade by upgrade, based on what we actually see across Sarasota jobs.

โ€œElectrical Upgradeโ€ Isnโ€™t One Job โ€” Itโ€™s a Dozen Different Ones

This is where a single number falls apart. A GFCI outlet swap and a full panel replacement both technically count as โ€œelectrical upgrades,โ€ and theyโ€™re nowhere close in price. So instead of pretending thereโ€™s one figure, hereโ€™s what each category actually runs, and what moves the number within each.

Panel Upgrades

Usually the biggest single-ticket item on this list. In Sarasota, a panel upgrade typically runs somewhere in the $1,800 to $4,500 range, depending on the amperage jump (100-amp to 200-amp costs more), whether the meter base or service entrance conductors need replacing too, and what Sarasota County permitting and inspection turn up once the panelโ€™s open. Older homes around Southgate and Whitfield Estates with original panels from the 70s or 80s tend to land toward the higher end โ€” thereโ€™s usually more supporting work involved once weโ€™re in there.

Whole-Home Surge Protection

One of the more affordable items here, and one we think is underrated given how often storm season brings grid surges through Sarasota. Installed at the panel, it generally runs a few hundred dollars โ€” a small fraction of what a single surge-fried AC compressor or refrigerator costs to replace. The cost-to-protection ratio genuinely favors the homeowner on this one.

GFCI and AFCI Circuit Upgrades

Price scales with how many circuits need protection. A single GFCI swap in a kitchen or bath is a modest job. Bringing an entire older home up to current GFCI and AFCI standards โ€” the kind of work we did last year for a homeowner in Indian Beach/Sapphire Shores with a house built before either of those protections were standard โ€” costs more since it touches more circuits, but itโ€™s usually still a single-visit job.

EV Charger Installation

Depends heavily on the distance from the panel to where the chargerโ€™s mounted, and whether the existing panel has room and capacity for the new circuit without a service upgrade first. A garage right next to the panel keeps the cost down. A charger on the far side of the house, or a panel thatโ€™s already close to capacity, pushes the number up. We always run the load calculation before quoting, because guessing on panel capacity leads to surprises nobody wants mid-install.

Rewiring โ€” Partial or Full

This is the widest cost range of anything on the list, because โ€œrewiringโ€ covers everything from addressing one problem circuit to gutting and rewiring an entire house. A partial rewire โ€” say, replacing aluminum wiring in one section of an older home near Fruitville โ€” costs a fraction of a full-home rewire, which means opening walls throughout, coordinating drywall repair, and multiple rounds of Sarasota County inspection. If youโ€™re facing this decision, get a scope-specific quote rather than a generic per-square-foot number โ€” wall access and layout affect this more than square footage does.

Smart Home Electrical Upgrades

A newer category, and pricing depends on how much of the home is being converted. A few smart switches is a modest add-on to any other work being done. A full smart panel system โ€” popular with the seasonal Sarasota homeowners we work with around Longboat Ranch and Casey Key who want to monitor the house remotely โ€” is a bigger investment, but often gets bundled in with a panel upgrade since the panelโ€™s already open anyway.

What Actually Drives the Number, Across All of It

A few factors show up on nearly every job, regardless of category:

  • Access. Attic access, crawlspace access, whether walls need opening โ€” this affects labor time more than materials do.
  • Permitting complexity. Straightforward work gets a straightforward permit. Anything touching the service entrance or adding significant load gets a closer look from Sarasota County, which can add an inspection cycle.
  • What we find once weโ€™re in there. We donโ€™t pad quotes, and we donโ€™t ignore a corroded connection or undersized wire we stumble on mid-job just because it wasnโ€™t in the original scope. Weโ€™ll tell you before doing extra work, never after.

One Thing Worth Knowing Before You Compare Quotes

A quote thatโ€™s dramatically lower than everyone elseโ€™s is usually missing something โ€” permit fees, a scope item, or corners cut on code-required work like GFCI and AFCI protection. Weโ€™d rather walk your home and give you a number based on whatโ€™s actually there, so youโ€™re comparing full information against full information, not against a lowball that gets revised upward once the walls are open.
