Had a homeowner out near Pelican Bay call us last month, pretty frustrated. He’d bought a charger online — good brand, decent reviews — installed it himself over a weekend, and it kept tripping the breaker every time he tried to actually charge overnight. Turned out the unit itself was fine. It just wasn’t the right charger for his panel, his garage setup, or honestly, his car. He’d bought based on price and star ratings, which is what most people do, and ended up with equipment that didn’t match his situation at all.
That’s the part nobody really talks about with EV chargers. It’s not really “which one’s the best” in some universal sense. It’s which one actually fits your home, your electrical service, and how you drive. We get asked constantly which charger to buy, and our answer’s always some version of “depends on a few things” — so let’s actually walk through what those things are.
Every EV comes with a Level 1 cord that plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet. Technically it charges your car. Practically, in Naples heat, where you’re running AC constantly and probably driving more than the national average because everything’s spread out, Level 1 charging is painfully slow — we’re talking overnight for maybe 40 miles of range. Fine for a plug-in hybrid that barely uses the battery. Not fine for anyone driving a full EV as their daily car.
Level 2 is what almost every homeowner ends up wanting. It runs on 240 volts, same as your dryer outlet, and can fully charge most EVs overnight — sometimes in a few hours depending on the charger’s output and your car’s onboard charger limit. If you’re shopping for a charger and it’s not a Level 2 unit, keep looking.
This is where the real decision lives, and it’s also where that guy near Pelican Bay went wrong. Level 2 chargers come in different amperage outputs — commonly 32, 40, 48, or 60 amps. A higher number sounds better, but it only matters if your electrical service can actually support it, and if your car’s onboard charger can use it.
Buying a 60-amp charger for a home with a 100-amp panel that’s already carrying a pool pump, central AC, and a full kitchen is asking for trouble — either the installer has to derate it, or you’re looking at a panel upgrade you didn’t budget for. We always tell people: figure out your panel’s available capacity first, then shop for the charger, not the other way around. NEC Article 625 covers electric vehicle charging equipment specifically, including load calculations, and it’s not optional paperwork — it’s there because undersized circuits on EV chargers are a legitimate fire risk, not just an inconvenience.
For most Naples homes with a modern 200-amp service and no other major loads competing for capacity, a 40 to 48-amp charger hits the sweet spot — fast enough for real overnight charging, without needing the most expensive circuit and breaker combination. If you’re on an older 100-amp service, or you’ve got a generator, pool heater, and a couple of AC units already in the mix, that’s a conversation to have before you buy anything.
Most Level 2 chargers come in two mounting styles — hardwired directly into a dedicated circuit, or plugged into a NEMA 14-50 outlet installed in the garage. Plug-in units are more flexible; you can take the charger with you if you move, or swap it out easily if something fails. Hardwired units tend to be slightly more weatherproof and don’t have a connection point that can loosen over time.
In Naples specifically, with the humidity we deal with most of the year, we lean toward hardwired installs for anything mounted where it’s exposed to the elements — even in a garage, moisture finds its way in more than people expect. If the charger’s going somewhere fully enclosed and climate-controlled, plug-in is a perfectly reasonable choice.
A lot of chargers now come with app connectivity, scheduling, and usage tracking. Some of that’s genuinely useful. Scheduling charging for overnight hours can matter if your utility has time-of-use rates, and being able to check charging status from your phone is convenient.
Storm-related monitoring is the one we’d actually flag as worth having in this area — a charger that alerts you if it loses connection or power can be a useful early signal after a storm rolls through, before you’ve even checked the rest of the house. Beyond that, a lot of the “smart” features are nice-to-have rather than need-to-have. We wouldn’t pay a premium for a unit with a flashier app if the base electrical spec doesn’t fit your home.
Not every charger sold nationally is rated the same for outdoor or semi-exposed mounting. If yours is going in a carport, an open-air garage, or anywhere near Naples Bay or the coastal corridor where salt air and humidity are a bigger factor, check the NEMA rating on the enclosure — NEMA 3R or better for anything with real weather exposure. We’ve pulled chargers off walls in Coquina Sands and Port Royal that looked fine for two years and then started corroding internally because the rating wasn’t right for where they were mounted.
Most chargers sold now use the standard J1772 connector, and with more manufacturers adopting NACS (the Tesla-style connector) or offering adapters, compatibility across brands has gotten a lot less complicated than it was even two or three years ago. Still worth double-checking against your specific vehicle before buying, especially if you’re planning to add a second EV down the road that might be a different make.
None of this is a substitute for having someone look at your actual panel before you buy. Collier County requires a permit for any new EV charging circuit, and that’s not a step to skip even if the install looks simple.
