Got a call last spring from a family out in Golden Gate Estates โ nice place, big lot, two-car garage, and theyโd just gone from one EV to two. Husbandโs Tesla, wifeโs new Rivian, both wanting Level 2 chargers installed before the second car even got delivered. Simple job, right? Two chargers, two spots on the wall, done in an afternoon.
Except it wasnโt. Their panel was already carrying a pool pump, a whole-house generator transfer switch, and central AC sized for a house that size โ which in Naples means itโs running most of the year, not just summer. Add two 40-amp EV circuits on top of that and we were suddenly having a very different conversation than โwhere do you want the chargers mounted.โ
This is the piece nobody really thinks about until theyโre standing in the garage with two cars and one electrical panel. Charging one EV at home is pretty well understood at this point. Charging two off the same service? Thatโs where things get more interesting, and honestly, where a lot of homeowners get surprised.
Hereโs the thing people assume, reasonably enough: if a 40-amp charger works for one car, two 40-amp chargers should work for two cars, just twice the circuit. Sometimes thatโs true. A lot of the time in Naples, it isnโt โ because your panel doesnโt just need to support the chargers, it needs to support the chargers plus everything else already pulling from it at the same time.
We do a full load calculation before we quote anything, and it follows NEC Article 220 for the whole-house math, with Article 625 specifically governing EV charging equipment on top of that. Two EVs charging simultaneously at 40 amps each is 80 amps of continuous load, and NEC treats continuous loads at 125% for sizing purposes โ so youโre really planning for the equivalent of 100 amps just for the cars. On a 200-amp service thatโs already running a pool pump and two AC units, that math doesnโt always leave room, especially in a Golden Gate Estates or Lely-style home built with a bit more square footage and a bit more equipment attached to it.
Homeowners โ or sometimes even well-meaning installers who donโt do the full calc โ treat each charger as its own isolated project. Charger one goes in fine. A year later, second EV shows up, charger two gets added without anyone going back and checking whether the panel can actually carry both at once. Thatโs how you end up with nuisance tripping, or worse, an inspector catching an overloaded panel during an unrelated permit pull and putting the brakes on everything until itโs corrected.
Not every two-EV household actually needs both cars charging at the same time, and this is usually where we can save people real money. If both cars come home around six and both need a full charge by morning, sure, you probably want two full-capacity circuits. But a lot of two-car families donโt actually charge that way โ one carโs plugged in during the day off a work-from-home schedule, the other overnight. In that case, load management does a lot of the heavy lifting without needing to touch the panel at all.
There are Level 2 chargers built specifically for this โ smart units that talk to each other and split available amperage dynamically between two vehicles, so youโre never pulling more than the circuitโs rated for even if both cars happen to plug in at once. Weโve been installing more of these in Naples over the past year or so, particularly for homes where a panel upgrade isnโt in the budget or isnโt practical because of where the panel sits relative to the garage. Itโs not the cheapest charger option on the shelf, but for a lot of two-EV households itโs cheaper than a panel upgrade, and it solves the actual problem instead of just moving it.
Sometimes thereโs no way around it โ older homes, especially ones still running on 100 or 150-amp service, just donโt have the headroom for two dedicated EV circuits no matter how clever the load management gets. If youโre in one of Naplesโ older neighborhoods, or even a newer build that came with a smaller service than youโd expect, a panel upgrade to 200 amps (sometimes 400, depending on what else is in the house) tends to be the honest answer, not the upsell answer. Weโll always show you the math before we recommend it โ nobody should be taking our word for it that an upgradeโs needed without seeing the load calculation themselves.
Collier County permitting for a single EV circuit is usually straightforward. Add a second dedicated circuit, especially if itโs paired with any panel work, and the permit review tends to look more closely at the whole-house load calculation rather than just the one circuit in isolation. We handle that submission as part of the job either way, but itโs worth knowing going in that a two-charger install isnโt always a rubber-stamp process the way a single charger often is.
