Got a call last spring from a family out in Golden Gate Estates โ€” nice place, big lot, two-car garage, and theyโ€™d just gone from one EV to two. Husbandโ€™s Tesla, wifeโ€™s new Rivian, both wanting Level 2 chargers installed before the second car even got delivered. Simple job, right? Two chargers, two spots on the wall, done in an afternoon.

Except it wasnโ€™t. Their panel was already carrying a pool pump, a whole-house generator transfer switch, and central AC sized for a house that size โ€” which in Naples means itโ€™s running most of the year, not just summer. Add two 40-amp EV circuits on top of that and we were suddenly having a very different conversation than โ€œwhere do you want the chargers mounted.โ€

This is the piece nobody really thinks about until theyโ€™re standing in the garage with two cars and one electrical panel. Charging one EV at home is pretty well understood at this point. Charging two off the same service? Thatโ€™s where things get more interesting, and honestly, where a lot of homeowners get surprised.

One Charger Plan Doesnโ€™t Just Double for Two Cars

Hereโ€™s the thing people assume, reasonably enough: if a 40-amp charger works for one car, two 40-amp chargers should work for two cars, just twice the circuit. Sometimes thatโ€™s true. A lot of the time in Naples, it isnโ€™t โ€” because your panel doesnโ€™t just need to support the chargers, it needs to support the chargers plus everything else already pulling from it at the same time.

We do a full load calculation before we quote anything, and it follows NEC Article 220 for the whole-house math, with Article 625 specifically governing EV charging equipment on top of that. Two EVs charging simultaneously at 40 amps each is 80 amps of continuous load, and NEC treats continuous loads at 125% for sizing purposes โ€” so youโ€™re really planning for the equivalent of 100 amps just for the cars. On a 200-amp service thatโ€™s already running a pool pump and two AC units, that math doesnโ€™t always leave room, especially in a Golden Gate Estates or Lely-style home built with a bit more square footage and a bit more equipment attached to it.

The Mistake We See Most Often

Homeowners โ€” or sometimes even well-meaning installers who donโ€™t do the full calc โ€” treat each charger as its own isolated project. Charger one goes in fine. A year later, second EV shows up, charger two gets added without anyone going back and checking whether the panel can actually carry both at once. Thatโ€™s how you end up with nuisance tripping, or worse, an inspector catching an overloaded panel during an unrelated permit pull and putting the brakes on everything until itโ€™s corrected.

Simultaneous vs. Staggered Charging Changes the Whole Equation

Not every two-EV household actually needs both cars charging at the same time, and this is usually where we can save people real money. If both cars come home around six and both need a full charge by morning, sure, you probably want two full-capacity circuits. But a lot of two-car families donโ€™t actually charge that way โ€” one carโ€™s plugged in during the day off a work-from-home schedule, the other overnight. In that case, load management does a lot of the heavy lifting without needing to touch the panel at all.

Load-Sharing Chargers Are Worth a Real Look

There are Level 2 chargers built specifically for this โ€” smart units that talk to each other and split available amperage dynamically between two vehicles, so youโ€™re never pulling more than the circuitโ€™s rated for even if both cars happen to plug in at once. Weโ€™ve been installing more of these in Naples over the past year or so, particularly for homes where a panel upgrade isnโ€™t in the budget or isnโ€™t practical because of where the panel sits relative to the garage. Itโ€™s not the cheapest charger option on the shelf, but for a lot of two-EV households itโ€™s cheaper than a panel upgrade, and it solves the actual problem instead of just moving it.

When the Panel Upgrade Conversation Is Unavoidable

Sometimes thereโ€™s no way around it โ€” older homes, especially ones still running on 100 or 150-amp service, just donโ€™t have the headroom for two dedicated EV circuits no matter how clever the load management gets. If youโ€™re in one of Naplesโ€™ older neighborhoods, or even a newer build that came with a smaller service than youโ€™d expect, a panel upgrade to 200 amps (sometimes 400, depending on what else is in the house) tends to be the honest answer, not the upsell answer. Weโ€™ll always show you the math before we recommend it โ€” nobody should be taking our word for it that an upgradeโ€™s needed without seeing the load calculation themselves.

Permitting Gets a Little More Involved With Two Circuits

Collier County permitting for a single EV circuit is usually straightforward. Add a second dedicated circuit, especially if itโ€™s paired with any panel work, and the permit review tends to look more closely at the whole-house load calculation rather than just the one circuit in isolation. We handle that submission as part of the job either way, but itโ€™s worth knowing going in that a two-charger install isnโ€™t always a rubber-stamp process the way a single charger often is.

What We Actually Look At Before Quoting a Two-EV Home

When we get a call like the one from that Golden Gate Estates family, hereโ€™s roughly what weโ€™re checking before we ever talk chargers:

  • Current panel size and how much spare capacity actually exists, not just whatโ€™s on the label
  • Everything else pulling continuous or heavy cyclical load โ€” pool equipment, generators, AC units, tankless water heaters
  • Whether both cars realistically need to charge at the same time or on a stagger
  • Distance from panel to garage, since two circuits means two runs, and that adds up in a hurry with longer conduit distances common in a lot of Naplesโ€™ larger lots
  • Whether a load-sharing charger solves it, or whether weโ€™re genuinely looking at a service upgrade

That family ended up going with a paired load-management charger setup rather than a panel upgrade, once we walked through their actual charging habits โ€” turned out the Rivian mostly charged during the day, so simultaneous peak draw was never really the issue everyone assumed itโ€™d be.
