Had a family out in Ridgewood Park call us last spring โ nice lot, two-car garage, and theyโd just gone from one EV to two within a few months of each other. Wifeโs Model Y, husbandโs new Ford Lightning, both wanting Level 2 chargers before the truck even got delivered. Sounds simple. Two chargers, two spots on the garage wall, done in an afternoon, right?
Not quite. Their panel was already carrying a pool pump, a home generator transfer switch, and central AC sized for a house that size โ which in Sarasota means itโs running most months of the year, not just July and August. Stack two 40-amp EV circuits on top of that, and we were suddenly having a very different conversation than โwhere do you want these mounted.โ
This is the part of EV ownership nobody thinks about until theyโre standing in the garage with two cars and one panel between them. Charging a single EV at home is pretty well understood by now. Charging two off the same service is where things get more interesting, and where a lot of Sarasota homeowners get caught off guard.
Hereโs the assumption people make, reasonably enough: if a 40-amp charger works for one car, two 40-amp chargers should work for two, just twice the circuit. Sometimes that holds up. A lot of the time in Sarasota, it doesnโt โ because your panel isnโt just supporting the chargers, itโs supporting the chargers plus everything else already pulling from it at the same time.
We run a full load calculation before quoting anything, following NEC Article 220 for the whole-house math and Article 625 for the EV charging equipment specifically. Two EVs charging simultaneously at 40 amps each is 80 amps of continuous load, and NEC requires continuous loads to be sized at 125% โ so youโre really planning for the equivalent of 100 amps just for the cars. On a 200-amp service already carrying a pool pump and two AC systems, that math doesnโt always leave enough room, especially in a Ridgewood Park or Kensington Park-style home with a bit more square footage and equipment attached to it.
Homeowners โ and sometimes installers who skip the full calculation โ treat each charger as its own isolated project. First charger goes in fine. A year later, the second EV shows up, second charger gets added without anyone circling back to check whether the panel can actually carry both at once. Thatโs how nuisance tripping starts, or worse, how an inspector catches an overloaded panel during an unrelated permit and stops the job cold until itโs corrected.
Not every two-EV household actually needs both cars charging at the same time, and this is usually where real money gets saved. If both cars come home around six and both need a full charge by morning, you probably do want two full-capacity circuits. But plenty of two-car families donโt charge that way โ one car plugs in during the day off a work-from-home schedule, the other overnight. In that case, load management handles most of the problem without touching the panel at all.
There are Level 2 chargers built specifically for this โ smart units that communicate with each other and split available amperage dynamically between two vehicles, so youโre never pulling more than the circuitโs rated for even if both cars happen to plug in at once. Weโve installed more of these across Sarasota over the past year, particularly for homes where a panel upgrade isnโt in the budget or isnโt practical given where the panel sits relative to the garage. Itโs not the cheapest charger option available, but for a lot of two-EV households, itโs cheaper than a panel upgrade and it actually solves the problem instead of just relocating it.
Sometimes thereโs no way around it. Older Sarasota homes still running on 100 or 150-amp service just donโt have the headroom for two dedicated EV circuits, no matter how clever the load management gets. If that describes your situation, a panel upgrade to 200 amps โ sometimes 400, depending on everything else in the house โ tends to be the honest answer, not the upsell answer. Sarasota County permitting for a single EV circuit is usually straightforward. Add a second dedicated circuit, especially paired with any panel work, and the review tends to look more closely at the whole-house load calculation rather than just the circuit in isolation. We handle that submission either way, but itโs worth knowing a two-charger install isnโt always the rubber-stamp process a single charger often is.
