Had a homeowner out near Gateway call us a few weeks back, quoting a number heโ€™d seen online โ€” some flat โ€œ$400 to install an EV chargerโ€ figure from a general contractor site. We had to be straight with him: that number assumes a lot of things that usually arenโ€™t true. A panel with room to spare. A garage close enough to the panel that the wire run is short. No permit complications. In reality, most Fort Myers homes need at least one of those assumptions corrected, and thatโ€™s where the actual number comes from.

So instead of throwing out a single figure thatโ€™ll be wrong for half the people reading it, weโ€™d rather walk through what actually drives the cost of an EV charger install here, so you can get a realistic sense of where your projectโ€™s likely to land before you call around for quotes.

The Baseline: What Youโ€™re Actually Paying For

An EV charger installation covers a few distinct pieces โ€” the charger equipment itself if weโ€™re supplying it, the dedicated 240-volt circuit run from your panel to the charging location, the breaker sized correctly for the equipment, mounting and connection labor, and the Lee County permit thatโ€™s required for any new circuit like this. NEC Article 625 governs the equipment and circuit requirements specifically for EV charging, and itโ€™s not a formality โ€” undersized wiring or an improperly rated breaker on a charging circuit is a legitimate fire risk, not just a paperwork issue.

For a straightforward install โ€” panel has available capacity, garage or carport is close to the panel, no trenching or major wall work needed โ€” we typically see total installation costs in the range of $800 to $1,800 including the electrical work and permit. Thatโ€™s the number most homeowners with a reasonably modern panel and a garage-adjacent parking spot should expect.

What Pushes the Number Up

Panel Capacity Is the Big One

If your panelโ€™s already near its limit โ€” which we run into constantly in homes built before the mid-90s around San Carlos Park and North Fort Myers โ€” adding a 40 or 48-amp EV charging circuit might not be possible without upgrading the panel first. A panel upgrade in Lee County typically runs $1,800 to $4,500 depending on the scope, and if thatโ€™s part of your project, itโ€™s the dominant cost, not the charger install itself. We always check capacity before quoting anything, because thereโ€™s no point pricing a charger circuit on a panel that canโ€™t actually support it.

Distance From Panel to Charging Location

The further the charger is from your panel, the more wire, more labor, and sometimes more conduit protection is needed to get there. A charger mounted right next to the panel is a different job than one at the far end of a detached garage, or worse, across a driveway from the main house. Every additional twenty or thirty feet of run adds to the labor time, and if the run has to go through finished walls, attic space with limited access, or underground for a detached structure, that adds more still.

Hardwired vs. Plug-In Installation

A hardwired charger, wired directly into a dedicated circuit with no outlet in between, is usually slightly less expensive in materials but similar in labor to a plug-in setup using a NEMA 14-50 outlet. The bigger cost difference usually comes down to what the charger manufacturer requires and whether you already own the unit or need us to supply one.

Trenching for Detached Garages

If your charging location is in a detached garage or a structure not directly wired from the main panel already, running a new underground feed means trenching, conduit, and often a sub-panel at the destination. Thatโ€™s a meaningfully bigger project โ€” homes with detached garages or workshops out near the McGregor corridor and Fort Myers Shores waterfront lots run into this more often, given how those properties tend to be laid out.

Permit and Inspection Timing

Lee County requires a permit for any new EV charging circuit, and that permit needs to be pulled and, in most cases, inspected before the installation is considered complete. Permit fees are a smaller line item relative to the labor and materials, but permit processing time affects how quickly the whole project actually finishes, which matters if youโ€™re timing this around a new vehicle delivery.

What Weโ€™d Tell You to Watch Out For

A quote thatโ€™s dramatically below everything else youโ€™re seeing usually means somethingโ€™s missing โ€” the permit isnโ€™t included, the panel capacity wasnโ€™t actually checked, or the circuitโ€™s being undersized to hit a lower number. Weโ€™ve been called out more than once to fix a DIY or budget install where the charger was tapped into an existing circuit that wasnโ€™t rated for the continuous load an EV pulls overnight. Thatโ€™s not a shortcut, itโ€™s a fire hazard waiting for the right conditions.

Weโ€™d rather give you an honest number based on an actual look at your panel and garage layout than a phone estimate that changes once weโ€™re on site. If two quotes for the same house come in wildly different, ask whatโ€™s included in each before assuming the cheaper one is the better deal.

Getting a Real Number for Your Home

Every one of these figures depends on your panelโ€™s current capacity, the distance from panel to charging location, and whether any structural work is involved โ€” which means the only way to get a number you can actually rely on is having someone look at the property. Coharbor Electric is a licensed and insured electrical contractor serving Fort Myers and the surrounding area โ€” Gateway, San Carlos Park, North Fort Myers, Fort Myers Shores, and the McGregor corridor included. Weโ€™ll assess your panel and layout, give you a clear number before any work starts, and handle the Lee County permit so the install holds up when itโ€™s inspected.
