Had a call from a homeowner out on Casey Key back in October, calling from up north before sheโ€™d even landed for the season. Charger had worked fine back in April when she left. Now sheโ€™s flying in with an EV and expecting it to just work the way it did seven months ago โ€” except a charger that sits untouched for most of the year in a Florida garage doesnโ€™t always pick back up exactly where it left off, and she wanted to know before she got here whether that was actually true or just her being paranoid.

Not paranoid. This is a real thing, and itโ€™s specific enough to Sarasotaโ€™s seasonal-resident population that itโ€™s worth its own conversation, separate from the general โ€œhow do I install a chargerโ€ question most homeowners are asking.

Why Seasonal Use Is Genuinely Different From Daily Use

A charger that runs every night handles a kind of consistent load and thermal cycling that an electrician expects and plans around. A charger that sits idle for five, six, seven months and then gets used hard for a few weeks is a different pattern entirely, and Floridaโ€™s humidity doesnโ€™t make it easier. Garages on Casey Key, Longboat Ranch, and Siesta Key that arenโ€™t climate-controlled see real humidity swings across a Sarasota summer, and connectors, terminals, and even the chargerโ€™s internal components can be affected by months of that exposure sitting unused.

None of this means seasonal EV charging is a bad idea. It just means the maintenance conversation looks different for a part-time resident than it does for someone charging every night of the year.

What Weโ€™d Check Before You Arrive for the Season

If youโ€™re a seasonal Sarasota homeowner and want your charger genuinely ready before you touch down, hereโ€™s what actually matters:

Breaker and Connection Integrity

A breaker thatโ€™s sat untouched for months can develop more resistance at its connections than one cycling regularly โ€” not usually enough to fail outright, but enough that a load test before your first real charge is worth doing rather than assuming everythingโ€™s fine because it was fine in the spring.

Corrosion at the Charger Connector

This is the one people donโ€™t think about. The charging connector itself, especially on units mounted in an uninsulated garage, can develop light corrosion on contact points during a humid off-season. Usually itโ€™s minor and doesnโ€™t affect function, but on a charger thatโ€™s going to get heavy use in a short window while youโ€™re in town, catching this before it becomes a connection problem mid-season saves you a service call you donโ€™t want during your limited time here.

Whether Anything Changed on the Utility Side

FPL occasionally does line work or service upgrades in a neighborhood over the course of a year, and while that rarely affects your homeโ€™s internal wiring, itโ€™s worth a quick check that nothing changed at the service entrance while you were away โ€” especially after any named storm activity during hurricane season, which is exactly the stretch most seasonal owners are gone for.

Remote Verification Before You Fly Down

Weโ€™ve started offering something we didnโ€™t used to bother with: a remote pre-arrival check for seasonal clients, where we swing by the property, run a load test on the charger and its circuit, and confirm everythingโ€™s functioning correctly before you land โ€” rather than you finding out the chargerโ€™s not cooperating on night one when youโ€™re jet-lagged and just want the car charging.

For homes with smart panels or monitoring already installed, some of this can be checked remotely without a truck roll at all. For homes without that infrastructure, an in-person check a week or two before your seasonal arrival is the more reliable option.

Planning the Charger Around a Part-Time Schedule

Thereโ€™s also a genuine planning question seasonal residents face that full-time residents donโ€™t: is a full Level 2 install even the right call if youโ€™re only in town four to six months a year? For most seasonal EV owners, the answerโ€™s still yes โ€” the alternative is relying on public charging during your time here, which defeats a lot of the convenience of owning an EV in the first place. But it does change some of the sizing conversation. If youโ€™re not driving daily commuter miles while youโ€™re here, a 32-amp charger might genuinely be enough, versus the 48 or 60-amp unit a full-time daily driver might want. Buying more capacity than your actual usage pattern needs doesnโ€™t add value, it just adds cost.

What Happens If You Skip the Off-Season Check

Weโ€™ve been called out more than once for a seasonal homeownerโ€™s โ€œthe chargerโ€™s just not workingโ€ call that turned out to be a connection issue that had been quietly developing since the previous spring. Itโ€™s rarely dangerous by the time itโ€™s caught, but itโ€™s exactly the kind of thing thatโ€™s a five-minute fix in September and a frustrating start to your season in November if itโ€™s not caught ahead of time.

Get Your Charger Ready Before You Land

If you split your time between Sarasota and somewhere else and want your EV charger verified and ready before you arrive for the season, Coharbor Electric is a licensed and insured electrical contractor serving seasonal homeowners across Sarasota โ€” Casey Key, Longboat Ranch, and Siesta Key included. Weโ€™ll run a load test on your existing charger and circuit, check for any corrosion or connection issues that built up over the off-season, and make sure everythingโ€™s working the way you left it โ€” before youโ€™re standing in the garage with a car that needs charging and a system that hasnโ€™t been checked since spring.
