Had a guy out in Palmer Ranch call us in a bit of a panic last fall. New EV was getting delivered in four days, and heโd spent the weekend before โgetting the panel readyโ based on a YouTube video and a trip to the hardware store. Heโd added a breaker into an open slot, wired it to a NEMA 14-50 outlet in the garage, and felt pretty good about it. Then he actually plugged the car in that first night, and the breaker tripped within twenty minutes. Came to find out the โopen slotโ heโd used was on a bus bar that was already close to its rated capacity once you accounted for the AC, the pool pump, and everything else running on that leg. The slot was empty. The capacity wasnโt there. Those are two very different things, and itโs the mistake we see more than any other.
If youโre planning ahead for an EV and thinking about handling some of this yourself, hereโs where we see people go wrong most often โ not to scare you off, just so you know what actually matters versus what looks right on the surface.
This is the big one, and itโs exactly what happened in Palmer Ranch. A panel can have a physical slot open for a new breaker while the panelโs total amperage is already maxed out from everything else already connected. Breaker slots and electrical capacity are two completely separate things. Just because thereโs room to click a new breaker in doesnโt mean the panel has the actual power headroom to run it safely.
The only way to know your real available capacity is a load calculation under NEC Article 220, which accounts for everything already drawing power in the home โ AC, pool equipment, water heater, kitchen appliances โ against what your service is actually rated to deliver. Skipping that step and going by โthereโs an open slotโ is how you end up with a breaker that trips constantly, or worse, one that doesnโt trip when it should.
A lot of DIY installs size the breaker to match the number printed on the chargerโs spec sheet, without accounting for the fact that EV charging is a continuous load โ meaning it runs at that draw for hours at a time, not in short bursts like most household appliances. NEC Article 625 addresses this specifically, and code requires the circuit be sized for 125% of the chargerโs continuous rating, not the rating itself. A 40-amp charger needs a 50-amp circuit, not a 40-amp one. That extra margin isnโt padding โ itโs there because continuous heavy loads heat up wiring and connections differently than something that cycles on and off.
Weโve been called out more than once โ including a place out near Bird Key last year โ to fix an install where someone ran the charger off an existing 240-volt circuit that was already doing something else, like a dryer outlet, on the theory that โitโs already 240 volts, so it should work.โ It might power on. Itโs not sized or dedicated correctly, and sharing a circuit between a dryer and an EV charger means neither one gets the safety margin itโs supposed to have. EV charging circuits need to be dedicated, full stop.
This oneโs tempting because a lot of these installs genuinely look simple โ run a wire, add a breaker, mount an outlet. But Sarasota County requires a permit for any new electrical circuit like this, and skipping it isnโt just a paperwork risk. It means nobody with training has verified the wire gauge, the breaker sizing, the connection quality, or the grounding. If something goes wrong down the line โ a fire, an insurance claim, a home sale inspection โ an unpermitted electrical modification becomes a much bigger problem than the permit fee would have been.
We talk to a lot of homeowners in places like Whitfield Estates and Casey Key who are planning one EV now but thinking about a second down the road, or already running a pool heater and a whole-home generator transfer switch off the same panel. Prepping a panel in isolation for todayโs one charger, without factoring in what else might get added to that same panel in the next few years, often means paying for the same job twice โ once now, and again later when the panel turns out to be maxed out anyway.
An older panel isnโt automatically a problem, and a newer one isnโt automatically fine. Weโve seen 1990s panels in great shape with plenty of headroom, and weโve seen panels from the early 2000s that were undersized from day one for the house theyโre in. Going by age alone โ assuming โitโs not that old, it should be fineโ โ skips the actual question, which is what the panel can deliver right now, today, for what youโre asking it to do.
None of this means you need a full panel replacement before getting an EV. Plenty of homes have exactly the capacity needed already. The difference between doing this right and doing it wrong isnโt about spending more money โ itโs about knowing your actual numbers before wiring anything, instead of guessing based on what looks reasonable.
