Electrician Services ยป EV Charger Installation ยป What Sarasota Homeowners Should Know About EV Charger Installation Costs | CoHarbor Electric
We had a homeowner out in Gulf Gate Estates ask us flat out last month: โjust tell me a number, I donโt want the whole speech.โ Fair enough. Except with EV chargers, the honest answer really does depend on a couple things we canโt skip past โ mainly, what your panel looks like right now and how far the chargerโs going from it. So hereโs the number, and hereโs what actually moves it.
For a straightforward install โ panel has room to spare, charger location is close to the panel, no major access issues โ total cost including the electrical work and Sarasota County permit typically runs $800 to $1,800. Thatโs the number most homeowners with a reasonably modern panel and a garage-adjacent parking spot land on.
That figure covers the dedicated 240-volt circuit, correctly sized breaker, connection and mounting labor, and the permit itself. NEC Article 625 governs the equipment and circuit requirements for EV charging specifically, and itโs there for a real reason โ an undersized circuit on a charger thatโs pulling continuous load overnight is a fire risk, not just a code technicality.
If your panelโs already close to its limit โ which we see often in homes built before the mid-90s around South Trail and pockets of Venice โ adding a 40 or 48-amp EV circuit might not be possible without a panel upgrade first. Thatโs typically $1,800 to $4,500 depending on scope, and if itโs part of your project, itโs the dominant cost, not the charger circuit itself. We check available capacity before quoting anything, because pricing a charger circuit on a panel that canโt support it isnโt an honest number.
Every extra stretch of wire run adds labor and material. A charger mounted right next to the panel is a much smaller job than one at the far end of a detached garage or across a driveway. If the run has to go through finished walls or attic space with limited access, that adds time too โ and if weโre talking a detached structure that needs an underground feed, trenching and conduit push the number up meaningfully. This comes up a fair amount on the larger lots out near Nokomis and Osprey where garages or workshops sit further from the house.
A hardwired install skips the outlet and wires the charger directly into the circuit โ usually a bit less in materials, similar in labor to a plug-in setup using a NEMA 14-50 outlet. The bigger cost swing here tends to come from what the specific charger manufacturer requires, not the mounting style itself.
Sarasota County requires a permit for any new EV charging circuit, and in most cases an inspection before itโs considered finished. Permit fees themselves are a smaller line item, but the processing timeline affects how fast the whole project wraps up โ worth knowing if youโre timing this around a vehicle delivery.
If youโre in a condo or HOA community, the electrical cost side can look different than a standalone home. Charging from your own unitโs panel keeps costs close to the baseline above. Shared charging setups with sub-metering, or load management systems for buildings with multiple owners wanting chargers, involve costs that get spread differently โ sometimes through the association rather than a single ownerโs invoice. Weโve walked through those governance and cost-sharing questions in more depth elsewhere if thatโs your situation; the short version is that itโs a board-level conversation more than an individual pricing question.
A quote noticeably lower than everything else usually means somethingโs missing โ no permit included, panel capacity never actually checked, or a circuit sized smaller than the charger actually needs to hit a lower number. Weโve been called out to fix installs where a charger got tapped into an existing circuit that wasnโt rated for continuous overnight load. Thatโs not a savings, itโs a risk sitting in the wall waiting for the wrong day.
Weโd rather walk your property and give you a number based on whatโs actually there than quote from a phone call and revise it upward once weโre on site. If youโre comparing quotes, ask what each one actually includes before assuming the lower number is the better deal.
Every one of these ranges depends on your panelโs current capacity, the distance to your charging location, and whether your situation involves an HOA or condo association.
