Electrician Services ยป Home Surge Protection & Electrical Safety ยป What It Costs to Replace a Depleted Surge Protector in Fort Myers | CoHarbor Electric
We got a call from a homeowner out in Alva this past storm season โ nothing had failed yet, but sheโd read something about surge devices โwearing outโ and wanted to know if hers, installed maybe six years back after a previous electrician talked her into it, was still doing anything. Fair question, and one we donโt get asked nearly often enough. We tested it. It was done. Whatever capacity it had was used up somewhere along the way โ probably in pieces, over several storm seasons, without her ever knowing it happened.
Thatโs a different conversation than โwhat does it cost to add surge protection for the first time.โ If youโve already got a device installed and youโre wondering what it runs to replace one thatโs depleted, failed, or just old enough that youโre not confident in it anymore, the answer has a few more moving parts than a fresh install does. Hereโs the honest breakdown.
A surge protective device has a finite capacity โ measured in joules โ for absorbing energy before the internal components that do the clamping are used up. Every surge event draws down that capacity a little. Most of the time nobody notices it happening, because the device keeps sitting there with its light on, looking fine, right up until it isnโt doing anything anymore.
The situations that usually bring someone to us for a replacement:
Before we talk replacement cost, itโs worth mentioning that testing an existing device is usually a quick, low-cost check โ often just a few minutes as part of a service call, sometimes bundled in for free if youโre already having other work done. Weโd rather test it and tell you itโs fine than sell you a replacement you donโt need yet. If youโre not sure whether yours needs replacing, thatโs the first call to make, not a guess.
A straightforward swap โ pulling the depleted device and installing a comparable new one at the same panel location โ typically runs $200 to $500 installed in Fort Myers. Thatโs a bit less than a brand-new first-time installation in some cases, since the wiring path and breaker slot are often already in place from the original install; itโs mostly labor and the device itself.
If youโre upgrading capacity while youโre at it โ going from a basic device to one with a higher joule rating, which is worth considering if the original was a lower-end unit or if youโve added more electronics and equipment since it was first installed โ expect $300 to $650 depending on the device specified.
If the original installation wasnโt done well โ we occasionally find devices connected with an undersized breaker, poor termination, or a mounting location thatโs exposed it to more heat or moisture than it should have seen โ thereโs sometimes minor corrective work involved beyond a straight swap. That adds modestly to the labor, usually not more than an hour or so extra.
If a technicianโs already at your panel replacing a depleted device, itโs a reasonable time to consider whether other layers are worth adding that werenโt part of the original installation.
Subpanel protection, if you have a detached garage or pool equipment subpanel that wasnโt covered originally, runs $80 to $200 per device plus labor โ meaningfully cheaper to add during this visit than as a separate trip later.
HVAC disconnect protection, small devices at $30 to $80 each, is worth adding if your original installation predates the HVAC system currently running, since control boards on newer variable-speed units are more surge-sensitive than older equipment.
None of this is required to complete a basic replacement. Itโs just worth mentioning because we see homeowners replace a depleted device and stop there, when the same service visit was a natural opportunity to close a gap elsewhere in the system.
Lee County treats a surge device replacement the same as a new installation for permitting purposes โ itโs permitted electrical work, and a licensed contractor pulls that permit as part of the job. If your replacement is happening because of a specific storm event and youโre dealing with an insurance claim related to other damage from that same event, itโs worth asking your contractor for documentation of the depleted device and the replacement โ adjusters sometimes want that as part of a broader claim involving surge-damaged equipment.
The most common mistake is assuming a working indicator light means a working device. Depletion doesnโt usually turn the light off โ it just means the protective capacity is gone while the connection status light stays lit. The second is waiting until after something fails to check the device, when testing it proactively โ especially right after a significant storm โ catches the problem before it costs you a piece of equipment.
We saw this play out with a homeowner near Page Park whoโd had a device installed for years, assumed it was fine because nothing had failed, and only found out it was depleted after we tested it during an unrelated service call. Nothing had gone wrong yet. It just hadnโt been protecting anything for a while.
If youโve got surge protection installed already and youโre not sure whether itโs still doing its job โ especially after a recent storm, or if itโs been more than a few years since anyone looked at it โ weโd rather check it honestly than have you find out the hard way.
