A homeowner near Palmer Ranch asked us this straight out a few months back, after we found her poolโ€™s bonding grid disconnected at a single lug near the equipment pad โ€” corroded through, most likely years earlier, with nobody ever the wiser because the pool kept working exactly like it always had. Sheโ€™d owned the house for eleven years. The pool predated her ownership by at least a decade before that. โ€œHow was I supposed to know to check this?โ€ she asked, and itโ€™s a fair question, because nothing about a working pool tells you whether the safety system underneath it is actually intact.

Thereโ€™s a real answer to how often this should get checked, and itโ€™s shorter than most Sarasota pool owners assume.

The General Rule: Every Two to Three Years

For most Sarasota pools, a full electrical inspection โ€” bonding continuity, GFCI protection, equipment pad connections โ€” every two to three years is a reasonable baseline. More frequent for older pools, pools that have had renovation or resurfacing work done, or properties where nobodyโ€™s sure when the last check actually happened. This isnโ€™t a number we picked arbitrarily. It reflects how bonding grids and ground-fault devices degrade in a coastal humidity environment, and how long that degradation can progress before it becomes visible in any way a homeowner would notice on their own.

Why Pool Electrical Needs This More Than People Expect

Bonding conductors and clamps under NEC Article 680 are typically bare copper, and coastal humidity and salt exposure corrode those connections faster than a drier inland climate would. A bonding connection that was solid a decade ago can be compromised today purely from environmental wear, without anyone having touched it. GFCI protection has its own failure mode โ€” a device thatโ€™s tripped and been reset repeatedly over years, sitting in an enclosure thatโ€™s taken on moisture, can stop actually protecting the circuit while still appearing to work normally.

Neither of these failures comes with a warning. The pool keeps running, the pump keeps humming, and the only way to know whether the underlying safety system is intact is to actually test it.

What Triggers a Check Outside the Regular Schedule

  • Any deck resurfacing, renovation, or landscaping work near the pool, since bonding conductors can get disturbed or disconnected without anyone specifically thinking about them during that work
  • Pool equipment replacement โ€” a new pump, heater, or chlorinator installed without reconnecting bonding to the old unitโ€™s mounting hardware
  • A tingling sensation anywhere near the pool, however slight, which should be treated as a bonding emergency and checked immediately, not filed away for later
  • Buying or selling a property with a pool, especially one thatโ€™s more than a decade old or where inspection history is unclear
  • An insurance inspection or renewal that flags the pool electrical for review

What a Real Pool Electrical Inspection Involves

A proper inspection tests bonding continuity with a meter across the full grid โ€” the pool shell, equipment, deck reinforcement, and any metal fencing or fixtures within the bonded perimeter โ€” rather than just a visual check. It verifies GFCI protection is actually functioning on every required circuit, not just present. And it checks connections at the equipment pad and any lugs or clamps for corrosion, since thatโ€™s usually where a bonding failure originates.

Most of this genuinely isnโ€™t visible from a walk-through. It takes access to the equipment pad and, in some cases, direct testing with a meter to confirm the system is actually intact rather than just assumed to be.

Permitting for Any Corrections

If an inspection finds a bonding issue or GFCI failure, the repair requires a permit through Sarasota County, since itโ€™s life-safety-related work rather than routine maintenance. That permit and inspection process confirms the correction actually restores full compliance rather than just patching the immediate symptom.

What Weโ€™d Tell Any Sarasota Pool Owner

If youโ€™re not sure when your poolโ€™s electrical was last actually inspected โ€” not just used, inspected โ€” thatโ€™s worth finding out. Itโ€™s a straightforward assessment, and itโ€™s a lot easier to schedule on your own timeline than to discover a gap during a renovation, a sale, or after someone feels something in the water. For a deeper look at what bonding actually is and why it matters so much in older waterfront homes specifically, weโ€™ve covered that in more detail in our Sarasota pool bonding and grounding guide.
