PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 30-AMP GENERATOR INLET & SURGE PROTECTION INSTALLATION – NAPLES, FL

We recently completed a residential backup power setup for a home in Naples, FL. The homeowner wanted a reliable way to connect a portable generator to their main electrical panel while keeping everything safe and up to code.

WHAT WE DID:

  • Installed a 30-amp generator inlet for portable generator connection
  • Ran a ¾” PVC conduit from the main panel across the garage to the inlet location
  • Installed an interlock kit for the homeowner’s Square D QO panel
  • Added a two-pole 30-amp breaker dedicated to the generator connection
  • Installed a standard surge protection device for whole-home electrical safety
  • Added a two-pole 20-amp breaker for the surge protection system

THE RESULT:

The home is now prepared for safe generator use during power outages. With the interlock kit, the homeowner can switch from utility to generator power without the risk of backfeeding. The surge protection device offers added safety for sensitive electronics and appliances. The entire installation was completed efficiently and to NEC standards.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How does the interlock kit work?
It mechanically prevents the generator breaker and the main breaker from being on at the same time, eliminating the danger of backfeeding power to the utility lines.

Can this setup power the whole home?
A 30-amp generator inlet can typically handle essential circuits such as lights, refrigerator, well pump, and a few outlets—not the entire house at once.

Why add surge protection?
Surge protection helps safeguard appliances and electronics from power spikes—whether from storms, grid issues, or generator use.

What’s the benefit of PVC conduit in the garage?
PVC conduit provides durable, code-compliant protection for the wiring and is resistant to corrosion and physical damage.

Do I need a permit for this kind of work in Naples?
Yes—generator inlet installations typically require an electrical permit, and we handle all permitting as part of our service.
