Got a call from a homeowner in Pinecraft who said her microwave โjust stopped workingโ every time she ran it while the toaster was plugged in nearby. Not broken โ just stopped, breaker tripped, every time. Sheโd been unplugging the toaster before using the microwave for months, treating it like a quirky household habit instead of what it actually was: a clear sign that circuit had too much asked of it. Thatโs the thing about shared circuits. They usually donโt fail dramatically. They just nag you, quietly, until youโve built your whole routine around avoiding the problem instead of fixing it.
So hereโs how to actually tell the difference โ is this appliance genuinely sharing a circuit that canโt handle it, or is something else going on?
Most homes have general-purpose circuits that power several outlets and lights across a room or area, all pulling from the same 15 or 20-amp breaker. Thatโs fine for lamps, phone chargers, a TV โ low-draw stuff that rarely runs simultaneously at meaningful wattage. The trouble starts when something with real electrical appetite โ a microwave, a space heater, a window AC unit โ ends up sharing that same circuit with other things that are also drawing power.
A dedicated circuit means one breaker, one circuit, serving exactly one piece of equipment. No sharing. Itโs not about the appliance being special โ itโs about giving something with a heavy or specific draw its own lane so it isnโt competing with anything else on that line.
This is the classic tell, like the Pinecraft microwave and toaster. If a breaker only trips when two specific things are running at once โ never when they run separately โ thatโs not a faulty breaker. Thatโs the breaker doing exactly what itโs supposed to do: cutting power before the combined draw overheats the wiring. The appliance isnโt broken. The circuit is undersized for whatโs being asked of it.
If overhead lights on the same circuit dim noticeably the moment a window AC compressor kicks in, or a hair dryer starts up, thatโs a voltage drop caused by a sudden current draw the circuit is struggling to supply cleanly. Occasional minor flicker isnโt necessarily alarming, but a consistent, repeatable dimming pattern every time a specific appliance starts is worth having looked at โ it usually means that appliance would be better served with a dedicated line.
This one gets skipped over more than it should. A warm outlet cover, a warm plug, or a cord that feels warmer than it should after use is a sign of resistance heating happening somewhere in that connection โ often from a connection carrying more current than itโs rated for over an extended period. We take this seriously when we find it. Itโs not always about needing a dedicated circuit specifically, but itโs always worth an inspection, and appliance-specific dedicated circuits are frequently part of the fix.
If youโve quietly trained yourself to unplug the toaster before the microwave, or run the space heater only when the hair dryerโs off, take that seriously. Homeowners normalize this faster than youโd expect โ it starts feeling like a quirky household rule instead of a workaround for a circuit thatโs underpowered for whatโs on it.
If a GFCI outlet or breaker trips reliably whenever one particular appliance runs โ especially something with a motor, like a refrigerator, freezer, or garbage disposal โ that can sometimes point toward that appliance needing its own circuit rather than sharing GFCI protection with other loads that are also sensitive to the combined draw.
Certain equipment is either required by code to have a dedicated circuit or strongly benefits from one regardless of code minimums. Refrigerators, microwaves, dishwashers, garbage disposals, and washing machines typically fall into this category in a properly wired kitchen or laundry setup โ current code under NEC Article 210 requires dedicated circuits for kitchen countertop receptacles and specific laundry and bathroom circuits for exactly this reason. Window AC units, space heaters, and electric water heaters are common candidates too, especially in older Arlington Park and Gillespie Park homes we work in that were wired before these appliances became standard household equipment.
A Level 2 EV charger needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit, typically 40 or 50 amps depending on the charger, and this isnโt a โnice to haveโ โ itโs a hard requirement, not something that can share a circuit under any circumstance. The diagnostic question with EV chargers usually isnโt โdoes this need its own circuitโ โ thatโs a given โ itโs whether the panel has both the amperage headroom and an open breaker space to add one. Thatโs a different conversation, and sometimes it leads to a panel upgrade conversation rather than just a new circuit.
Not every tripping breaker or warm outlet points to a dedicated circuit problem. Sometimes itโs a failing breaker thatโs become oversensitive with age. Sometimes itโs a loose connection somewhere in the circuit unrelated to load. Sometimes itโs aging wiring โ particularly in older Ridgewood homes weโve worked in with original wiring from the 60s and 70s โ where insulation has degraded regardless of whatโs plugged in. Part of the diagnostic process is ruling these out before assuming the fix is simply โadd a dedicated circuit,โ because if the underlying wiring is compromised, a new circuit off the same degraded panel wonโt solve the actual problem.
Once weโve confirmed a dedicated circuit is the right fix, the work itself depends heavily on the panelโs condition. If thereโs an open breaker slot and available amperage, itโs often a contained job โ running new wire from the panel to the appliance location, sized correctly for the load, on its own breaker. If the panel is full or doesnโt have the amperage to spare, thatโs when the conversation expands to include panel capacity, and sometimes a full panel upgrade becomes part of the scope.
