We get this question pretty regularly โ usually from someone who just bought an EV, or whoโs getting quotes on a pool, or whoโs finally pulling the trigger on that addition theyโve been planning for three years. The question is some version of: โDo I need to upgrade my electrical panel for this?โ
And the answer is: maybe. But in a lot of Sarasota homes, especially anything built before the mid-โ90s, the answer leans toward yes โ and itโs worth understanding why before youโre three weeks into a project and an electrician is telling you thereโs no room left in the panel.
When a house goes up, the electrical service gets sized for what the builder expects people to put in it. In the โ70s and โ80s, that meant lights, a few outlets, maybe an electric range, a central AC unit, and a washer and dryer. Thatโs a 100-amp life. Some older homes around Gulf Gate Estates, Southgate, and the neighborhoods north of downtown that got built out in that era โ 100-amp service was completely standard. A few were wired for even less.
Then life changed. People started running two refrigerators. Home offices became a thing. Outdoor kitchens went in. Big flat-screen TVs in every room, game consoles, streaming devices. All of it adds up. A house that was fine on 100 amps in 1983 has been slowly accumulating load for forty years.
Then someone decides to add a pool, or buys a Tesla, or wants to put a mother-in-law suite over the garage. And now weโre having the panel conversation.
Even homes that are newer โ built in the โ90s or early 2000s โ were frequently wired for 150-amp service. That was a step up from the older stock, but itโs not necessarily enough for the way people use electricity today, especially once you start adding large dedicated loads.
Before getting into the specific scenarios, it helps to understand what youโre actually getting when you upgrade to 200-amp service.
The service size โ 100 amps, 150 amps, 200 amps โ is the maximum amount of electrical current your home can draw at any given time. Think of it like the size of the pipe bringing water into your house. A bigger pipe doesnโt mean youโre using more water constantly โ it means you can run more things at once without pressure dropping. Same idea here.
A 200-amp panel also typically comes with more circuit spaces. An older 100-amp panel might have 20 or 24 spaces, and in a home thatโs had work done over the years, those spaces fill up fast. A 200-amp panel usually offers 40 or more spaces โ room to add the circuits you need without doubling up or adding a sub-panel as a workaround.
And in terms of future-proofing: if youโre going to put money into your homeโs electrical system, doing it once and doing it right beats a piecemeal approach that has you calling an electrician back every two years.
This is probably the most common conversation weโre having right now. EV ownership in Southwest Florida has grown a lot in the last few years, and thereโs a persistent myth that you can just plug your car into a regular outlet and call it fine. You can โ technically. A standard 120-volt outlet will charge an EV. Itโll just add about four or five miles of range per hour, which means if you drive a normal amount and youโre starting from a depleted battery, youโre looking at two or three days to fully charge.
Most EV owners eventually want a Level 2 charger โ a 240-volt dedicated circuit that can add 25 to 30 miles of range per hour. Thatโs a meaningful difference. You plug in when you get home, wake up in the morning, carโs charged. Thatโs how itโs supposed to work.
A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240-volt, 50-amp circuit. Thatโs not something you pull from the existing wiring. Thatโs a new circuit run from the panel, and it requires a 50-amp breaker space to put it in.
Hereโs where we run into issues. We get called to do an EV charger install and the homeowner has a 100-amp panel thatโs already got 18 or 20 circuits on it. Thereโs one breaker space left, maybe two. You canโt put a 50-amp circuit in a panel that doesnโt have the capacity to support it.
Even if there are physical spaces available, a 100-amp panel canโt always handle the additional load a 50-amp EV circuit represents โ especially if the house is already running AC, an electric water heater, a dryer, and everything else at once. The math has to work out, not just the space.
In those cases, we have the panel conversation. And for a lot of Sarasota homeowners with older service, a panel upgrade is the right move anyway โ the EV charger just became the tipping point.
Sarasota has a lot of pools. The climate makes them practical nine or ten months of the year, and in neighborhoods like Palmer Ranch, Lakewood Ranch, and the waterfront areas around the bay, a pool is almost expected. But pools are also one of the larger electrical loads you can add to a residential property.
A typical residential pool setup includes a pump motor โ often 1.5 to 2 horsepower, sometimes more โ plus pool lighting, a heater or heat pump if you have one, an automated controller, and often a spa with its own jet pump. A basic pool pump alone typically needs a 20-amp dedicated circuit. A pool heat pump can pull 30 to 50 amps on its own. Add the lights, the automation, the spa equipment, and youโre looking at two, three, sometimes four dedicated circuits just for the pool system.
Every one of those needs its own breaker space and its own conductor run back to the panel. In a panel thatโs already full or close to it, thatโs a problem.
Pools in Florida also require specific wiring under NEC Article 680 โ the code section that governs swimming pools, spas, and fountains. There are rules about GFCI protection, bonding, and the placement of receptacles near water. None of that is optional, and it all adds to the circuit count. When we do a pool electrical installation, weโre always doing it to code, which means accounting for all of it โ and that means confirming the panel has the capacity before we start pulling wire.
If your panel is a 100-amp unit with limited space and youโre adding a full pool and spa setup, a 200-amp upgrade isnโt a luxury. Itโs just what the project requires.
An addition โ whether itโs a guest suite, a converted garage, an in-law apartment, or an extra bedroom โ adds habitable space and the electrical load that goes with it. New square footage means new lighting circuits, new outlet circuits, sometimes a dedicated circuit for a mini-split AC unit, potentially a kitchenette circuit if itโs a full suite.
A modest addition of 300 to 400 square feet can easily require four to six new circuits. Larger additions or full ADUs might need eight, ten, or more. If the existing panel doesnโt have the physical space or the amperage capacity to absorb that, the addition becomes the trigger for an upgrade.
When you pull a permit for an addition in Sarasota County, the electrical portion of the inspection process looks at whether the existing service is adequate for the new total load. If the inspector or the electrical plan reviewer determines that the service is undersized for whatโs being added, youโre upgrading the panel before the addition gets signed off. Thereโs no way around it.
Weโve seen homeowners get surprised by this mid-project. The framing is up, the drywall is going in, and they find out they need a panel upgrade they hadnโt budgeted for. Getting an electrician involved at the planning stage โ before the permit application, ideally before the contractor bids are even final โ avoids that scenario.
Outdoor living spaces are a big part of how people use their Sarasota homes. A covered lanai with a fully equipped outdoor kitchen โ refrigerator, ice maker, outlets for appliances, lighting, ceiling fans, maybe a TV โ can need three or four dedicated circuits on its own. Not a problem if the panel has room. A real conversation if it doesnโt.
Whole-home generators have become a much more common discussion after the hurricane seasons of the last several years. A standby generator needs a transfer switch and its own connection to the panel โ or in the case of a whole-home system, a service-side connection that requires adequate panel capacity to be useful in the first place. You canโt install a 22-kilowatt generator on a 100-amp panel and expect it to power much of anything meaningful.
If youโre thinking about a whole-home generator, the panel conversation is part of that conversation whether you want it to be or not.
A service upgrade in Sarasota โ going from 100 or 150 amps to 200 amps โ involves a few moving parts. First, we pull a permit with Sarasota County. Then we coordinate with FPL, who needs to come out to pull the meter before we do the panel work. We install the new panel and make all the connections. FPL comes back to restore power after our work is done. Then we schedule the county inspection.
The electrical work itself is usually a day, sometimes a day and a half for a more complex service entrance upgrade. Most homeowners are without power for a few hours during the swap. Itโs not a multi-day ordeal.
The permit and inspection process exists for good reason. Anyone telling you they can do a service upgrade without a permit is telling you theyโre doing work that wonโt be inspected โ and in Florida, uninspected electrical work can create real problems when you sell the home or file an insurance claim.
Weโre not in the business of upselling people on things they donโt need. If a homeowner has a newer home with 200-amp service already installed and they want to add an EV charger, we look at the available capacity and existing load and figure out if it works. Often it does.
But for a significant portion of the existing housing stock in Sarasota โ particularly the homes built in the โ70s, โ80s, and early โ90s that make up so much of Gulf Gate, Southgate, the areas around South Trail, and the older sections of Venice and Nokomis โ 100-amp service is a starting constraint, not a permanent limitation. The electrical system in the house should serve the life youโre actually living, not the life someone imagined in 1982.
The best time to figure out whether your panel can handle what youโre planning is before youโve committed to the project โ not when the pool contractor is waiting on the electrical rough-in, or when your EV is sitting in the driveway uncharged.
