Electrician Services ยป Electrical Panels ยป How Much Does an Electrical Panel Upgrade Cost in Sarasota? | CoHarbor Electric
Itโs the first thing most homeowners want to know, and itโs a fair question. The honest answer is that the cost depends on what we find when we look at your home โ but we can walk you through what drives the number, what a realistic range looks like in Sarasota, and what to watch for when youโre comparing quotes.
Most residential panel upgrades in Sarasota fall between $1,800 and $4,500. Thatโs a real range, and it exists because the scope varies that much from one home to the next. A 200-amp upgrade on a newer home in Lakewood Ranch or Palmer Ranch is a different job than replacing an aging panel on a 1970s home near the water in Siesta Key or Bird Key where the service entrance has seen years of coastal exposure.
Five things move the number more than anything else:
Panel size. Most Sarasota homes upgrading from older service are moving to 200-amp, which is the current residential standard. Larger homes โ waterfront properties on Siesta Key, Lido Beach, or in established communities like The Founders Club โ may require 400-amp service. Thatโs a more involved job and costs more accordingly.
Condition of the existing service entrance. This is the biggest variable for Sarasota homes specifically. Salt air, heat, and humidity are hard on electrical equipment. Weโve opened panels on homes close to the Gulf where the corrosion on the weatherhead, service entrance cable, and meter can was well beyond what the panelโs age would suggest. On a newer inland home, this usually isnโt a factor at all.
Sub-panel involvement. If your home has a sub-panel feeding a detached garage, a pool house, or a guest suite, and that equipment also needs work, it adds to the scope.
Generator integration. If youโre adding a transfer switch for a standby generator at the same time, combining it with the panel upgrade is almost always the more cost-efficient path. The panel is already open and weโre already coordinating FPLโs involvement โ doing both together saves a separate trip and a separate FPL coordination.
Age and configuration of the home. Older homes in Gulf Gate, South Trail, or Nokomis sometimes have conditions that affect scope โ panel locations that donโt meet current clearance requirements, modified service entrances, or wiring that needs to be addressed before the permit closes. We find these during the assessment, not mid-job.
We can give you a ballpark, but not a firm number โ and any contractor who does is guessing. In Sarasota, especially on older or coastal properties, those guesses often miss. We look at the home first, then quote.
Scope differences account for some of it โ some quotes include the permit and FPL coordination, some donโt. Some contractors are pricing off assumptions without seeing the home. And some low quotes mean the work wonโt be permitted, which creates problems down the road. Before you compare numbers, make sure you know whatโs actually included in each quote.
A panel upgrade replaces the service entrance equipment โ the main panel, the main breaker, and the connections that tie your homeโs circuits into FPLโs utility service. It includes removing the old panel, installing the new one, reconnecting all existing branch circuits, updating grounding and bonding to current code, coordinating with FPL for the utility disconnect and reconnect, and pulling the required permit through Sarasota County.
Yes, always. Panel work in Sarasota requires a permit through Sarasota County, and we include it on every job. Itโs not an add-on. The inspection that follows the permit is what confirms the work was done correctly and creates the documented record youโll need for insurance purposes and future home sales.
Yes. FPL has to disconnect and reconnect the utility service for the job to happen safely. We manage that coordination as part of the project โ itโs not something you need to arrange separately. FPLโs scheduling does have some variability outside anyoneโs direct control, which is one reason it helps to have lead time before you need the work done.
Prices that seem unusually low. If a quote comes in well below the ranges above, something is likely missing โ the permit, the FPL coordination, or part of the scope. Ask whatโs included before you sign anything.
Vague scopes of work. A quote should clearly state whether the permit, FPL coordination, grounding updates, and panel labeling are included. If you canโt tell from the paperwork, ask.
Firm phone quotes. Any contractor pricing your job without seeing the home is working from assumptions. On a straightforward newer home, that might be fine. On an older Sarasota property or a coastal home, itโs a real risk.
No permit pulled. Unpermitted panel work can cause your homeownerโs insurance to deny claims related to electrical issues, shows up on home inspections at sale, and skips the verification that the work was done right. Coharbor Electric pulls permits on every panel job. Thatโs not something we negotiate on.
Spring โ before hurricane season kicks in โ is the ideal window. Scheduling tends to be more open, thereโs no post-storm backlog, and equipment lead times are normal. Once June arrives and storm activity picks up, availability tightens. Homeowners in Sarasota who wait until after the first storm of the season often find themselves in a longer queue.
If your panel is aging, undersized, or a brand with known reliability issues like Federal Pacific or Zinsco, earlier is better. Those panels donโt improve with time, and the weather here accelerates the wear.
Almost always. A properly sized, permitted panel means your circuits arenโt strained, you can add load for new equipment without capacity concerns, your insurance documentation is clean, and your home is better positioned to handle whatever storm season brings. Itโs not a glamorous upgrade, but itโs one of the more practical ones you can make on a Southwest Florida home.
