If youโve lived in Sarasota for any length of time, you already know the climate here isnโt exactly gentle on a house. The salt air, the humidity that doesnโt really let up even in winter, the summer storms that roll in off the Gulf almost every afternoon โ all of it puts real stress on the electrical systems in your home. And older panels feel that stress more than anything else.
We do panel work all over Sarasota County โ Bird Key, Siesta Key, Gulf Gate Estates, Southgate, the Palmer Ranch area, Osprey, Nokomis. And the honest truth is, a lot of the panels we look at in this region were never sized for the way people actually live today. Most werenโt built to handle modern appliances, smart home tech, EV charging, or even a straightforward home office setup. When a panel that was fine in 1985 starts getting pushed, it starts showing you signs. The problem is most homeowners donโt know what those signs look like.
So letโs walk through what we actually see in the field โ the things that tell us a panel is either already failing or getting close.
This one seems obvious, but it gets ignored more than youโd think. A breaker tripping occasionally isnโt a crisis. A breaker that trips every time you run the microwave and the coffee maker at the same time, or one that trips two or three times a week without any clear reason โ thatโs something else.
Breakers trip because theyโre doing their job. Theyโre protecting the wiring from drawing too much current. But when a breaker trips repeatedly, it usually means one of a few things: the circuit is genuinely overloaded for how youโre using it now, the breaker itself has worn out and trips too easily, or thereโs a fault somewhere in the wiring.
In older Sarasota homes, we see a lot of panels where the original circuits were sized for way fewer devices than whatโs plugged in today. A kitchen circuit from the โ70s might have been fine when the only thing on it was a toaster and a coffee percolator. Now itโs running a microwave, an air fryer, a high-end espresso machine, and a refrigerator with a built-in screen. The math doesnโt work out.
This oneโs a little more urgent. If you open your panel cover and it feels warm to the touch, or if you notice a faint burning smell near the electrical panel โ even occasionally โ donโt wait on that. A warm panel or a burning smell usually means something inside is arcing or overheating. Thatโs a fire hazard, not a minor inconvenience.
Weโve gone out to homes in areas like Gulf Gate and Southgate where the homeowner noticed a smell they couldnโt quite place for weeks. When we opened the panel, we found scorching on the bus bar and at least two breakers that were clearly failing. The wiring behind them was discolored. It hadnโt caused a fire yet, but it was heading there.
Heat and moisture are a brutal combination for electrical panels. In coastal Sarasota โ and especially in homes close to the water on Siesta Key or Casey Key โ salt air gets into everything. Over time, that accelerates corrosion inside panels in ways you canโt see from the outside.
When you turn on your dishwasher or your air conditioner kicks on and the lights in the next room dim for a second, thatโs called a voltage fluctuation. A healthy panel with properly sized circuits handles that without much noticeable effect. But a panel thatโs struggling โ either because itโs overloaded or because the internal connections have degraded โ will let that voltage drop show up in your lighting.
In Florida, this becomes even more of an issue during peak summer months when your AC is running hard. The compressor start-up draws a big surge of current, and if your panel is already stressed, that surge is going to telegraph itself through your whole house.
Occasional, brief dimming when a major appliance starts is somewhat normal. But if lights are flickering without any obvious cause, or if they dim and stay dim, or if youโre seeing this across multiple rooms regularly โ thatโs your panel asking for help. It can also indicate loose connections at the panel itself, which is a separate problem that needs attention quickly.
If youโre in an older home in Sarasota โ and there are plenty of them, especially in areas like Southgate, Gulf Gate Estates, and the neighborhoods north of downtown โ thereโs a real chance your home still has a fuse box. Fuse-based electrical systems were standard for decades, but they werenโt designed for modern electrical loads, and most insurance companies in Florida today either wonโt insure a home with a fuse box or will charge significantly higher premiums.
Beyond the insurance issue, fuse boxes have a practical problem: when a fuse blows, some homeowners replace it with a higher-rated fuse to stop it from blowing again. Thatโs genuinely dangerous. The fuse is protecting the wiring. When you put in a 30-amp fuse on a circuit with 15-amp wiring, youโve removed the safety mechanism entirely. Weโve seen wiring in older homes that was visibly charred because of exactly this.
If your Sarasota home still has a fuse box, a panel upgrade isnโt optional โ itโs overdue.
Most electrical panels are rated for a service life of around 25โ40 years under normal conditions. In a humid, salt-air environment like Sarasota, that lifespan can be shorter. If your home was built in the โ70s or โ80s and still has the original panel, thereโs a decent chance itโs operating beyond its designed service life.
That doesnโt automatically mean itโs dangerous tomorrow. But it does mean the internal components โ the bus connections, the breakers, the insulation on the wiring โ are aging. Connections loosen. Breakers become less reliable. Insulation can become brittle over time, especially with the heat cycling in a Florida attic.
Homes built before 1990 were typically wired for 100-amp service. Some had even less. Today, a modern home with central AC, multiple refrigerators, a dishwasher, electric dryer, home office equipment, a pool pump, and outdoor lighting can easily need 200 amps โ and homes with EV chargers or whole-home generators should really have 200 amps at minimum just as a baseline.
We get called out to homes in the Palmer Ranch area and newer parts of Sarasota where the house itself isnโt that old, but it was built with a 100-amp panel and the owners have added enough to it over the years that itโs genuinely undersized. The panel isnโt failed โ it just canโt do what they need it to do.
This is something we talk about a lot with homeowners who are planning a kitchen remodel, adding an in-law suite, or converting a garage. Adding a new major circuit โ whether itโs for a range, a hot tub, a whole-home generator hookup, or an electric vehicle charger โ requires available capacity in the panel.
A lot of panels we see in older Sarasota homes are already full. Every slot is taken. If you want to add a circuit, thereโs nowhere to put it. Sometimes that gets โsolvedโ with a tandem breaker, which might be acceptable depending on the panel, but often isnโt. Either way, itโs a sign that the panel itself may need to be replaced or at minimum supplemented with a sub-panel.
If youโre planning any kind of renovation that adds load โ tell your contractor early. And make sure an electrician is part of that conversation before permits get pulled, not after.
Open your panel cover sometime. Just look at it. If you see rust on the inside, corroded terminals, discoloration on the bus bar, or any evidence of moisture intrusion โ that panel needs to be looked at by a licensed electrician right away.
This is especially relevant for Sarasota homes closer to the water. Homes on or near the bay, on Siesta Key, in the Lido Key area, anywhere youโve got regular salt air exposure โ the inside of an electrical panel can look genuinely rough even when the outside looks fine. The panel cover is sheet metal. It seals out some moisture but not all of it. Over years, what gets in corrodes.
Corrosion on electrical connections increases resistance. Increased resistance means heat. And heat in an electrical panel is always something to take seriously.
A properly functioning electrical panel is essentially silent. You might hear a very faint hum โ thatโs normal in some panels. But if you hear a buzzing, crackling, or popping sound coming from your panel, thatโs arcing. Arcing inside a panel is how electrical fires start.
This oneโs not a โschedule an appointment sometime this weekโ situation. If your panel is making noise, call an electrician the same day.
We get a lot of questions about what a panel upgrade entails, so itโs worth explaining briefly. In most cases, replacing a residential panel in Sarasota means pulling a permit with Sarasota County, coordinating a temporary power shutoff with FPL, installing the new panel, and scheduling a county inspection before power is restored. The whole process is typically done in a day for a straightforward residential swap.
If thereโs a service entrance upgrade involved โ going from 100-amp to 200-amp service, which requires FPL to upgrade the meter and service drop โ that adds a coordination step but is still very manageable. We handle that coordination on behalf of our customers regularly.
