The morning after a big storm rolls through Naples, our phone starts ringing before weโve even finished our coffee. Half the time itโs the same story โ power flickered back on overnight, and now something in the house just isnโt right. A breaker wonโt reset. Outlets in the lanai are dead. The pool pump hums but wonโt actually run. Weโve been doing storm-recovery calls in this area long enough to know the pattern by heart, and honestly, it repeats more than people expect.
Naples sits right where Gulf humidity, salt air, and seasonal storm systems all collide, and that combination is hard on a homeโs electrical system in ways that arenโt always obvious right away. A house can come through a storm looking perfectly fine โ no shingles missing, no fence down โ and still have damage sitting quietly inside the panel or behind an outlet cover. Thatโs the part that gets people. The visible damage is rarely the dangerous part.
We get asked a lot why Naples homes seem to have more electrical trouble after storms compared to, say, somewhere inland. Part of itโs just geography. Weโre close to the water โ whether youโre near Naples Bay, Park Shore, or out toward Vanderbilt Beach โ and that proximity means more moisture intrusion, more corrosion on exterior connections, and more pressure on grounding systems during lightning activity.
Power surges are the other big piece. When utility crews are restoring service across Collier County after an outage, especially after multiple feeder lines have been knocked out, the grid doesnโt always come back up clean. You get voltage spikes, sometimes more than one, as different sections re-energize. Most homes can absorb a small surge without issue. A direct or near-direct lightning strike, or repeated surge cycling, is a different animal entirely.
Hereโs something that surprises a lot of homeowners โ you donโt need a direct lightning strike to your house for it to cause real damage. A strike to a nearby tree, a transformer down the street, even a strike that hits the ground a few hundred feet away can send a surge traveling back through the utility line and into your panel. Weโve pulled panels apart after storms where the homeowner swore lightning never touched their property, and found scorched bus bars anyway. The energy doesnโt need permission to find a path.
So what does this look like in practice? Weโll walk a property after a storm call and thereโs usually a handful of repeat offenders.
Tripped breakers that wonโt reset. Sometimes itโs simple โ a breaker did its job and just needs resetting. But if it trips again immediately, or trips a second time after a clean reset, thatโs the breaker telling you something downstream got damaged. We donโt recommend forcing it or holding it in. Thatโs asking for trouble.
Outlets and switches that feel warm or smell faintly burnt. This one we take seriously every time. A surge can cook the internals of a receptacle without any visible scorching on the cover plate. If something feels warm to the touch after a storm, or thereโs that faint plastic-burning smell near an outlet, that circuit needs to be checked before itโs used again.
Dead GFCI outlets in wet-prone areas. Lanais, pool decks, outdoor kitchens โ these GFCI-protected circuits take the brunt of moisture intrusion during storms. We see a lot of GFCIs that just wonโt reset after heavy rain gets driven sideways into an outdoor box. Sometimes itโs a simple GFCI replacement. Sometimes waterโs gotten further into the wiring than that, especially in older Naples homes near the coast where conduit seals have had decades to degrade.
Flickering lights that come and go. This is the one people tend to ignore the longest, and itโs frustrating because flickering can mean almost anything โ a loose neutral connection, a damaged service entrance cable, a failing breaker, or surge damage to a dimmer switch. We had a service call out in Golden Gate Estates a while back where flickering lights turned out to be a partially burned connection at the meter base. Thatโs not a DIY fix, and waiting on it isnโt a great idea either.
Pool equipment and irrigation controllers acting strange. Pool pumps, salt chlorine generators, well pumps โ anything with a control board is vulnerable to surge damage. We canโt tell you how many times a homeowner calls about the pool not running, thinking itโs a pump issue, and it turns out a surge fried the control board weeks ago and itโs just now fully failing.
A few patterns come up over and over, and we mention these gently because they come from good instincts, just pointed the wrong direction.
Resetting breakers repeatedly without figuring out why they tripped in the first place. We get it โ nobody wants to call an electrician at 7am the day after a storm. But a breaker that trips more than once after a storm is doing exactly what itโs supposed to do. Forcing it past that point isnโt bravery, itโs just risk.
Assuming surge protection at the outlet level is enough. Plug-in surge protectors help with small, everyday spikes โ a power strip protecting a TV, that kind of thing. Theyโre not built to handle a storm-related surge coming in through the service entrance. That requires protection at the panel level, and a lot of homes in this area, especially older ones, simply donโt have it.
Waiting to see if a problem โgoes away.โ Electrical issues caused by storm damage donโt self-correct. A loose connection thatโs arcing intermittently isnโt going to tighten itself back up. Itโs either going to keep being a nuisance or itโs going to get worse, and the worse version usually involves heat.
When we get called out after storm damage in Naples, weโre not just looking at the thing thatโs not working โ weโre checking the whole picture. That means the panel itself, looking for any discoloration, burnt smell, or signs of arcing at the bus bars. It means checking the grounding and bonding system, since a compromised ground can turn a manageable surge into a dangerous one. We check outdoor receptacles and weatherproof covers for water intrusion, test GFCI and AFCI devices for proper function, and look at the service entrance connection where the utility line meets the home โ that connection point takes a beating during high wind events even when nothing looks obviously wrong.
If a home doesnโt already have whole-home surge protection installed at the panel, this is usually the point in the conversation where we bring it up. Not as an upsell โ more because weโve seen what the alternative costs, both in equipment replacement and in peace of mind, when the next storm rolls through Southwest Florida and thereโs nothing standing between the grid and the house.
If your propertyโs closer to the water โ Port Royal, Aqualane Shores, anywhere along the bay โ weโre paying extra attention to corrosion at outdoor junction boxes and exterior panels. Salt air accelerates corrosion on copper connections in a way that inland homes just donโt deal with at the same rate. A connection thatโs been slowly corroding for two years might hold up fine in normal conditions, then fail completely the moment itโs stressed by a storm surge. Itโs not really storm damage at that point โ the storm just finished a job that started a long time ago.
Storm season in Naples isnโt a one-time event, itโs a stretch of months, and electrical systems that come through one storm a little weaker than before donโt usually get stronger on their own.
