We got called out to a home near Vanderbilt Beach the week after a tropical system rolled through a couple seasons back. Generator had run fine during the storm, kept the house going for three days without a hiccup, homeowner figured that was the end of it. Case closed, unitโ€™s fine, move on with life. Except when we looked underneath the enclosure, there was standing water that had crept in during the surge, and corrosion was already starting on a few of the low-voltage connections. Nothing dramatic yet. But left alone another month, thatโ€™s a unit that fails the next time it actually needs to run, storm or no storm.

Thatโ€™s the part people miss. A generator running well during a storm doesnโ€™t mean it came through the storm unscathed. Wind-driven rain, flying debris, storm surge in low-lying areas, salt spray getting kicked up and carried further inland than usual โ€” all of that can leave damage that doesnโ€™t show up as a failure until the next time you actually need the thing to start.

Why โ€œIt Ran Fineโ€ Isnโ€™t the Same as โ€œItโ€™s Fineโ€

A generator running through a storm is under real stress even when nothing visibly goes wrong. Itโ€™s often running longer and harder than it does during a routine self-test cycle. Meanwhile the storm itself is throwing conditions at the enclosure and the pad that a normal week never would โ€” driving rain finding its way past seals that were fine under regular weather, debris impact nobody heard over the wind, water pooling around the base if drainage got overwhelmed. None of that necessarily stops the unit from running today. It can absolutely set up a failure two months or two storms from now.

So the inspection after the storm passes isnโ€™t a formality. Itโ€™s the thing that catches the problem while itโ€™s still small and cheap to fix.

Check the Enclosure and Pad First

Before anything electrical, weโ€™re looking at the physical housing and the ground itโ€™s sitting on.

  • Standing water around the base. Even a generator on an elevated pad can end up with water pooled against it if drainage got overwhelmed during heavy rain or minor surge. Standing water near the unit is a corrosion risk and, depending on how it got there, sometimes a sign the padโ€™s original grading isnโ€™t handling water the way it should.
  • Debris in or around the enclosure. Leaves, small branches, roofing grit โ€” anything that blew in and settled near intake or exhaust vents can restrict airflow, and airflow restriction is how generators overheat.
  • Physical damage to the housing itself. Dents, cracked panels, or a door seal thatโ€™s no longer sealing tight all matter more here than they would on, say, a shed, because the enclosure is whatโ€™s keeping weather away from the electrical guts inside.

Salt Exposure Is Its Own Category

If youโ€™re anywhere near the coast โ€” Vanderbilt Beach, Naples Park, Royal Harbor, that whole corridor along the water โ€” storm winds can carry salt spray well inland, further than people expect on a calm day. Salt accelerates corrosion on metal connections and terminals in a way plain rainwater doesnโ€™t, and it does it quietly. A connection that looks fine to the eye can already be developing resistance that shows up later as an intermittent fault or a failure to start. This is really the top reason we tell coastal Naples homeowners not to skip a post-storm check even when the generator seemed to run perfectly.

Battery and Electrical Connections

Once the outside checks out, weโ€™re into the electrical side, and this is where storm stress does its quieter damage.

Extended runtime during an outage puts real demand on the battery, and if the battery was already marginal going into the storm, coming out the other side of a multi-day run is when it tends to reveal that. We check the batteryโ€™s actual charge and condition, not just whether the unit started, because a battery can start the engine one more time and still be on its last legs.

Connections and terminals get a close look too โ€” any sign of corrosion, looseness from vibration during extended operation, or moisture intrusion around wiring get addressed before they turn into an actual failure. This ties into the transfer switch as well, which is the piece of equipment responsible for keeping your homeโ€™s system properly isolated from LCECโ€™s grid during generator operation. If storm conditions compromised that connection in any way, itโ€™s not something to leave unchecked, given whatโ€™s actually riding on it working correctly.

Fuel System and Fuel Lines

If your system runs on propane, weโ€™re checking the tank connections and lines for any shift or strain that might have happened during high winds, particularly on above-ground tanks that took a direct hit from gusts. A line that got stressed during the storm might hold today and develop a slow leak weeks later. Worth catching now rather than assuming itโ€™s fine because nothing smelled wrong during the storm itself.

When to Call Someone Versus When to Just Look

A basic visual check โ€” clearing debris, checking for obvious water pooling, glancing at the enclosure for damage โ€” is something most homeowners can reasonably do themselves after a storm passes. But anything involving the electrical connections, the transfer switch, battery condition testing, or fuel line integrity is where weโ€™d tell you to bring in someone licensed rather than poking around yourself. Generators carry real voltage and, depending on fuel type, real combustion risk, and post-storm conditions โ€” wet ground, debris, reduced visibility if trees or fences came down nearby โ€” make DIY inspection riskier than it would be on a calm afternoon in March.
