PROJECT DESCRIPTION: GFCI REPLACEMENT, PHOTOCELL REPAIR & DISHWASHER CIRCUIT DIAGNOSTIC – FORT MYERS, FL

Coharbor Electric recently completed a multi-task residential service call in Fort Myers, FL. The homeowner requested assistance with a GFCI outlet near their washer, a front yard light photocell, and a dishwasher circuit that was not up to code.

WHAT WE DID:

  • GFCI Replacement: Removed and replaced a faulty GFCI outlet near the washer. Verified proper operation and ensured protection for the laundry area.
  • Photocell Replacement: Replaced the defective photocell controlling the front yard light, restoring automatic dusk-to-dawn functionality.
  • Dishwasher Circuit Diagnostic: Inspected an improperly hardwired dishwasher circuit with no power. The existing wire was sticking out from the back of the cabinet, which is a code violation. Determined that the original dishwasher circuit was buried behind the cabinet during a remodel. To correct this, we:
    • Added a new outlet, box, and whip for the dishwasher on the existing circuit.
    • Left cabinet modifications to the homeowner or contractor for access.
    • Advised that if the buried wire cannot be repaired, a new dishwasher circuit installation will be required at additional cost.

THE RESULT:

The GFCI outlet is now working correctly, providing reliable safety protection. The front yard light automatically powers on at dusk thanks to the new photocell. The dishwasher circuit has been made safer and closer to code compliance with the addition of a proper outlet and whip, while next steps for a permanent fix were clearly communicated to the homeowner.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long did this service call take?
All three tasks were completed in one visit lasting about 3.5 hours, including testing and homeowner walkthrough.

Why was the dishwasher circuit considered a code violation?
The dishwasher had been hardwired directly with exposed cable, which is unsafe and not code-compliant. Dishwashers require a proper outlet connection with an accessible box.

Do you cut cabinets to access buried wires?
No. Cabinet modifications are the responsibility of the homeowner or their contractor. We handle the electrical portion once access is provided.

What happens if the existing circuit cannot be repaired?
If the buried wiring is inaccessible or damaged, we can install a brand-new dedicated dishwasher circuit for an additional cost.
