We had a job out on Siesta Key a couple years back where the homeowner already knew exactly where he wanted his generator โ€” tucked against the back of the garage, low to the ground, out of sight from the street. Made sense visually. Didnโ€™t make sense once we pulled his flood zone designation and looked at the base flood elevation for that property. Where he wanted it wouldโ€™ve put the unitโ€™s controls and connections below the level the county requires for equipment like that in a flood zone. We ended up building it up on an elevated pad instead, which cost a bit more and took some redesigning, but it meant the thing would actually still be working after a storm surge event instead of sitting there ruined.

Thatโ€™s really the whole story with waterfront generator placement in Sarasota. Everybody wants to know about sizing and cost, sure, but if you live anywhere near the water โ€” Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Lido Key, Bird Key โ€” where that generator physically sits matters just as much as what size it is. Get the placement wrong and you can have the right unit, correctly sized, wired to code, and still end up with a generator thatโ€™s flooded and dead exactly when you need it most.
