Had a call a few weeks back from a homeowner over in Whitfield Estates โ dead outlet on her lanai, middle of a completely dry stretch. No storm in days. She kept saying โbut it hasnโt rained,โ like that ruled out humidity as the cause. Fair assumption, honestly. Most people think of rain damage as something that happens during the rain, or right after. But when we pulled the cover off that outlet, it told a different story โ corrosion built up slow, over a season or two, finally reaching the point where the connection just gave out on a random Tuesday with clear skies.
Thatโs the piece that trips people up, and itโs worth separating from what we usually talk about with storm damage. This isnโt about the outlet that fails during a downpour or trips right after a heavy rain event. This is about the outlet that fails weeks or months later, on a bone-dry afternoon, because of what humidityโs been doing quietly the whole time in between.
Weโve written before about outlets tripping during and right after rain events โ thatโs a real thing, and itโs usually a GFCI doing exactly what itโs supposed to do when moisture gets where it shouldnโt. This is a different animal. Weโre talking about the cumulative effect of Sarasotaโs humidity โ the kind that sits at 85-90% for half the year whether itโs actively raining or not โ working on connections little by little until one just fails on an unremarkable day.
No storm to blame. No obvious trigger. Just months of moisture doing what moisture does.
Outdoor and garage-adjacent outlets are the usual suspects, but itโs not always where youโd expect. Weatherproof covers help, sure, but theyโre not sealed vaults โ theyโre designed to shed direct rain, not to stop humid air from finding its way into the box over time through gaps around conduit fittings, screw holes, or a gasket thatโs dried out and shrunk after a few Florida summers. Once humid airโs inside the box, it doesnโt need a storm to cause problems. It just needs time.
We see it in garages a lot too, which surprises people since garages arenโt โoutdoorโ in the way a lanai outlet is. But an unconditioned garage in Sarasota runs through the same daily humidity swings as the outdoors โ hot and damp during the day, cooler and more saturated overnight. That cycling is its own slow-motion problem.
Hereโs the part thatโs easy to miss. Even in a box thatโs technically sealed well enough to keep rain out, temperature swings between day and night can cause condensation to form inside the box โ same way a cold glass sweats on a humid day. That moisture doesnโt evaporate quickly in an enclosed space. It sits against the metal contacts and the wire terminations, and over months, thatโs enough to start real corrosion even without a single drop of rain ever touching the outlet directly.
This is why we sometimes find corroded connections in boxes that look bone dry and completely undamaged from the outside. The moisture did its work and then evaporated, leaving corrosion behind as the only evidence anything happened.
People tend to assume a dead outlet means a bad outlet, and sometimes it is that simple. But a lot of what we find is corrosion at the connection point โ where the wire meets the terminal โ rather than a failure of the outlet device itself. Corroded copper doesnโt conduct electricity the way clean copper does. Resistance builds at that connection, which generates heat, which accelerates the corrosion further. Itโs a slow feedback loop, and by the time the outlet actually stops working altogether, that process has usually been running for a good while.
Replacing just the outlet in these cases doesnโt always fix it, because the real problem is back at the wire nut or the screw terminal, sometimes further back in the junction box feeding it. Weโve had outlets come back to life for a week or two after a swap, only to fail again, because the actual corroded connection was never touched.
GFCI outlets are more sensitive to this kind of gradual degradation than standard outlets, just by design โ theyโre built to detect tiny imbalances in current and cut power immediately when somethingโs off. Required by code in outdoor locations and wet areas under NEC Article 210.8, and for good reason. But that sensitivity means a GFCI outlet will often show symptoms โ nuisance tripping, refusal to reset, intermittent power โ well before a standard outlet in the same condition would fail outright. In a strange way, the GFCI failing first is actually the system doing its job. Itโs just easy to mistake โthe GFCI is brokenโ for the real story, which is usually โsomething upstream has been slowly degrading.โ
Age matters here more than location within Sarasota, though older, established neighborhoods like parts of Indian Beach/Sapphire Shores and areas closer to the bayfront tend to have more of the original 1970s and 80s-era outdoor wiring still in place, which just hasnโt had the same corrosion-resistant hardware thatโs standard in newer installs. Homes with a lot of outdoor living space โ pool decks, outdoor kitchens, lanais with multiple circuits โ also have more exposure points simply because thereโs more equipment out there absorbing humidity year after year.
None of this means older homes are unsafe by default. It just means theyโre due for a look sooner rather than later if outlets have started acting up without an obvious cause.
One is assuming that because it hasnโt rained, moisture canโt be the cause โ which is exactly the assumption that delays a lot of these calls. Another is replacing the outlet itself and considering the job done, when the corrosion was actually sitting further back at a splice or a junction box connection that never got inspected. And a third, maybe the most common one: spraying a corroded outlet with a household contact cleaner or WD-40 to get it working again short-term. That can mask the symptom for a little while, but it doesnโt address the corrosion or the moisture source, and it can actually make the connection harder to properly clean and repair later. If an outletโs acting up, itโs worth having someone actually open it up rather than treating the outside of the problem.
Itโs worth drawing this line clearly, because it changes how urgently weโd treat it. A sudden outlet failure during or right after a storm is often the system protecting itself โ a GFCI tripping on a moisture event, which is normal and usually resolves with a reset. A slow failure with no storm behind it, though, usually means somethingโs already been quietly deteriorating and just crossed a threshold. That second kind deserves an actual inspection, not just a reset and a shrug.
When a homeowner calls about a dead outlet with no rain event to point to, weโre not just testing the outlet. We pull the cover, look at the wire connections for discoloration or green corrosion buildup, check the condition of the box gasket and conduit seal, and trace back to see whether other outlets on the same run are showing early signs of the same thing. Catching it at outlet three, before it becomes outlet six, saves a lot of hassle down the line.
